Job profile Summary:
Performs intermediate to complex technical support, general lab maintenance, and lab operational support with some degree of independence to aid in research projects. Responsible for following lab safety standards.

Job Description:

Position Salary Range: $21.20- $26.49 per hour; DOE

The watershed technician will work under the supervision of Dr. Jasper Oshun and Dr. Kelly Hondula to map, measure, and model sources of contaminants to Hilo Bay. The technician will assist in establishing monitoring equipment, measuring hydrological parameters, collecting samples from major tributaries, and analyzing samples for sediment concentration and nitrate/phosphate using the Institute for Pacific Island Forestry (USDA) laboratory in Hilo. 

Essential Duties:

  • Literature review of sediment sources, sediment transport, and deposition in Hilo Bay. 
  • Identification and quantification of primary sources of sediment to Hilo Bay within watersheds of Waiākea, Wailuku, and Honoli‘i to constrain sediment transport models (InVEST).  

-Field work to measure infiltration capacity across range of land uses (forest, agriculture, etc.)

-Mapping of primary sediment sources in three primary watersheds. 

-Installation of gauging stations to measure streamflow, suspended sediment

concentration, and water quality.

-Lab analyses to develop spatial relationships between flow and sediment/nutrient load. 

  • In collaboration with advisor(s) write progress report by fall 2026, participate and contribute to regular meeting with community advisory committee.  

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience as a field technician in hydrogeological research.
  • Experience with soil moisture dynamics.
  • Familiar with ERT, GPR, and NMR geophysical surveys as well as GPS tools.
  • Experience with working with community groups.

Working Environment:

The technician will work in the field under challenging conditions (rain). Whereas all field sites are close to Hilo, some are in rural and forest areas. The technician will be responsible for coming prepared (food, water, rain gear, sturdy shoes, watershoes/waders, sun and bug protection etc). The technician will work with a supervisor when working in a stream, but may need to visit sites to take samples from the bank and/or download data independently.

The technician will also work in a laboratory and office setting and be responsible for learning and following protocols.

  • Climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of being in a stationary position.  
  • Constantly detects and operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine and computer printer.   
  • Ability to clearly communicate and exchange accurate information to perform essential duties.  
  • Expected to be responsive to customers, engaged in work production, resourceful, flexible, and respectful of others.
