Salary Information – CalHR salary rules allow appointment at the entrance rate (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 2, § 599.673) of a classification. For classes with alternate ranges, placement is based on education/experience. Employees appointed to the Attorney or Water Resource Control Engineer classification will receive Recruitment Higher Above Minimum (HAM) rate in accordance with the approved Civil Service Pay Scales.

In addition, note: Effective July 1, 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) which reduces an employee’s monthly salary in exchange for leave credits. Employees appointed to this classification will have their monthly salary reduced and will accrue hours of PLP 2025 on the first day of each pay period in accordance with the applicable bargaining contract. The salary range(s) included on this job posting do not reflect the reduction in pay.

Please note: this position is paid on an hourly basis and limited to 1500 hours per calendar year.  The salary range for Scientific Aid is $18.26 – $21.67 per hour.  

Join a team of professionals working to prevent agricultural runoff from polluting California’s waterways! The Regional Water Quality Control Board’s Central Valley Region has an opening for a temporary/intermittent Scientific Aid to help support our mission. The position will work as part of the Irrigated Land Regulatory Program, located at 11020 Sun Center Drive, Ste 200, Rancho Cordova, CA 95670.

Under the direct supervision of a Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory) and in alignment with the State and Regional Board’s Strategic Plan and customer service practices, the incumbent is expected to demonstrate courtesy, respond promptly to internal and external customers, follow through on commitments, and to solicit and consider customer input when completing assignments.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Attention to detail in written documents.
  • Database work, including using Microsoft (MS) Excel and/or MS Access.
  • Reviewing and assisting with preparation of various technical documents in MS Word.
  • Assisting with enforcement actions.
  • Copy, scanning, and archiving scientific documents.
  • Answering phone calls from public about basic routing scientific related issues, including pulling scientific reports for public review.
  • Responding to emails including Public Act Requests.
  • Participating in water quality site inspections.
