Introduction

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Division of Environmental Management, Waste and Materials Management Program is accepting applications for a Hydrogeologist position and can be located at the Milwaukee, Waukesha, Fitchburg or GEF 2 Central Office in Madison, WI. Position will be filled at the Entry or Senior level depending on applicant qualifications.

This recruitment may be used for any similar vacancies that become available in the near future. Remote work will be available, after the initial onboarding period. The exact amount is based on program need and supervisor discretion.

Position Summary

The primary duties of this position are to provide geologic and hydrogeologic principles and practices in carrying out the Waste and Materials Management (WA) program’s responsibilities.

Salary Information

Hydrogeologist starting salary is between $29.50 – $35.02 / hour ($ 61,360.00 – $ 72,841.60) depending on qualifications. Plus, excellent benefits.

Hydrogeologist-Senior starting salary is between $32.45 – $37.08 / hour ($ 67,496.00 – $ 77,126.40) depending on qualifications. Plus, excellent benefits.

The Hydrogeologist is in schedule-range 15 – 04 and The Hydrogeologist-Senior is in schedule-range 15 – 03. Pay on appointment will follow the provisions of the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan.

Job Details

Probationary Period: A 12-month probation period may be required.

Remote Work:  May occur as per department telework guidelines and supervisor approval.

Travel: This position has responsibility for waste and materials management facilities in the assigned counties and other areas of the state as assigned by the supervisor. Frequent travel is required within the assigned counties, with occasional travel to other locations in the state for inspections, training, meetings or conferences. 

Qualifications

Minimally qualified candidates will have each of the following qualifications:

  • Education or experience in Geology, environmental, or soil science with an emphasis on hydrogeology.
  • Experience monitoring, enforcing, implementing or consulting on environmental regulations.
  • Experience in the management and coordination of large datasets including the use of spreadsheets and databases (such as excel, oracle or similar). 

In addition, highly qualified candidates will have one or more of the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science or more advanced academic degree in Hydrogeology, Geology, Earth, Environmental.  
  • Experience with landfill or other solid waste facility design, operation and/or regulation (i.e. Chapter NR 500.). 
  • Experience working as a hydrogeologist in a regulatory environment.
