The Department of Environment has a GradCorps internship opportunity for a Hydrologist. This position strengthens the resiliency of the Yukon government’s flood forecasting and monitoring program through the planning, development, evaluation, and implementation of the hydrology program for Yukon. The incumbent also provides data analysis and reporting for Water Resources Branch, and supports the implementation of data processes and solutions.
This position will work for a one-year Term from approximately March 2026 to March 2027. The salary will be 80% of the starting salary – $75,601

Essential Qualifications

- A diploma or degree in physical sciences, engineering, environmental sciences, data or computer sciences, or related field of study
- Course work, and work or project experience related to any of the following: water resource sciences (i.e. hydrology, meteorology, hydrogeology); natural resource management; statistics; data analysis and management, and field sampling techniques
- Experience with the use of software or programming languages commonly used for the synthesis and analysis of large environmental datasets (e.g. R, Python, SQL, or similar) and/or experience with hydrological or hydraulic modelling (e.g. Raven, SUMA, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS)
Desired Knowledge, Skills and Suitability
Candidates should have and may be assessed on:
- Data input, analysis, and interpretation skills
- Ability to conduct technical research and projects
- Strong oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate information (i.e. reports, summaries, presentations)
- Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills as this position will work in a team environment in the office and field setting
- Ability to manage time and projects, and problem solve in a high-paced, event driven setting
- Ability to participate in field trips to remote locations (including ATV or snowmobile travel, or travel in rotary or fixed wing aircraft)
Additional Information
Conditions of Employment:Class 5 Yukon Drivers’ License.
Job Requirements:Â Field work in all weather conditions and remote areas, lifting of heavy objects, travel via ATV, boat, snowmobiles, helicopters, and small planes.
NOTE: To qualify for the GradCorps program, you must:
• be a resident of Yukon or a person of Yukon First Nations ancestry*
• have graduated with a diploma or degree from a recognized post-secondary institution within the past two years (2024, 2025 or 2026 grads – all requirements for graduation must be complete before internship start date)
• have little or no work experience in your field of study
*If you are a resident of Yukon who completed your studies outside of the territory, you may apply up to two years after graduation.
