The primary purpose of this position is to conduct, and report on scientific evaluations regarding the quality of surface waters of the state. Of particular importance to this position is performing assigned field collections of water quality data from lakes located throughout the state. This includes high profile long-term studies such as the Jordan Lake and Falls Lake nutrient management monitoring strategies and basin-specific ambient lakes monitoring.
Key Responsibilities:
Position will assist with conducting intensive surveys for modeling purposes, such as those related to nonpoint sources, performed to determine water quality in an affected area, or surveys related to surface water reclassifications.
Position will collect and analyze data with clarity and correct interpretation and support all functions of the Intensive Survey Branch.
Position will plan, implement, compile and evaluate water quality surveys and resultant information on lakes and reservoirs located throughout the state.
Conduct Database management involving communication with mainframe applications.
Assist with organization, data entry, and interpretation of data collected during surveys and lakes monitoring.
Interpret data based on technical knowledge, water quality standards, state and federal regulations and specific permit limits to provide a thorough and accurate evaluation of the objectives.

The Division of Water Resources (DWR) is responsible for protecting North Carolina’s drinking, surface and ground water for all waterbodies including lakes, streams, rivers, wetlands, and aquifers. This environmental stewardship is accomplished through actions including issuing permits, investigations, regulatory compliance and enforcement, monitoring and field assessments, certifications, laboratory analysis and testing, planning, water quality standards management, educational outreach, and other efforts. The Division comprises five Sections: Water Quality Regional Operations; Water Sciences; Public Water Supply; Water Quality Permitting and Water Planning. This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays. The NC Department of Environmental Quality trusts our employees to be self-motivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.
Minimum Education and Experience
