Role description:

We are seeking a Water Engineer to join our Water Management Team in New York City.

This role sits within our Water Management Practice in our Global Resilience Water Group, where we work to protect our natural environment and water resources while powering our world for future generations. Around the world, we’re feeling the effects of climate change, rapid urbanization, and loss of biodiversity. The rate at which we’re seeing large-scale, unforeseen events such as floods and wildfires is becoming more frequent.  

The coastal modeling team is seeking a water engineer with knowledge of riverine and coastal modeling to support flood resiliency projects nationwide. The water engineer will assist the coastal modeling team members with preprocessing, model runs, and post processing model results for various coastal resilience design projects both in New York City and across North America. The water engineer will be exposed to a variety of models that the team uses such as Delft3D, HEC-RAS, SWAN 2D, and ADCIRC as well as model editing software like ArcGIS and SMS.  

Role Accountabilities: 

As a water engineer, your duties will include the following: 

  • Work with coastal model team members to develop computer models using simulation software to analyze various flow conditions and geographies. 
  • Utilize GIS, MATLAB, and Python to manipulate bathymetry, topography, and other datasets to support project requirements.  
  • Analyze data and prepare comprehensive reports, both static and dynamic, to communicate results effectively.  
  • Technical report writing and editing that will need to be completed for the engineering design projects. 
  • Simultaneous involvement in various projects, requiring your adeptness at multitasking.   
  • Some travel may be required for project site visits, client meetings, and other reasons depending on project staffing needs.  

The ideal candidate possesses strong experience and proficiency in MS Office software, coupled with exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and a strong work ethic. They demonstrate excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, are self-motivated, and excel at working both independently and collaboratively within a team environment. 

Qualifications & Experience: 

Required Qualifications   

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Coastal Sciences, or related field 
  • Completed coursework in watershed hydrology, fluid mechanics, or open channel hydraulics  
  • Familiarity working with GIS software (i.e., ESRI or QGIS), Familiarity working with hydrodynamic models (i.e. HEC-RAS)  

Preferred Qualifications  

  • Previous internship experience 
  • Working towards master’s in engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Coastal Sciences, or related field 
  • Experience working in engineering design particularly related to the coastal restoration, flood risk resilience, or infrastructure projects 
  • Knowledge of engineering concepts, theories, and practices related to hydrology, hydrodynamics, and climate change 
  • One or more of the following:
    • Proficiency with ESRI GIS software, specifically ArcGIS Pro  
    • Proficiency with Python, Matlab, or related coding languages

Actual salaries will vary and are based on several factors, such as experience, education, budget, internal equity, project and location.
