The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit, Science- and Technology-oriented Educational and Research Institution, based in Cyprus and governed by an acclaimed Board of Directors. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres, namely:

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute’s Water Department of the EEWRC on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassas Campus (Nicosia).
To improve our knowledge of hydrologic and agro-ecosystems processes in a variable and changing semi-arid climate, the Department maintains several hydrologic and and agro-ecosystems monitoring observation stations in Cyprus.
The successful candidate’s main focus will be on applied field research activities related to ongoing Soil Mission projects funded by the European Commission, aiming at combating land degradation and desertification.
The Research Technical Specialist will support the maintenance of field and laboratory equipment and will conduct water, soil and plant observations in the field and analyses in the laboratory. Additionally, the successful candidate will contribute to literature review, scenario development and mapping of land degradation across different Living Labs, in cooperation with researchers and graduate students of the Water Department.
The rank of the position will depend on the candidate’s qualifications and experience (Research Technical Scientist or Research Technical Assistant as per relevant job descriptions).
Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:
· Field research activities
· Maintenance of hydrologic, meteorological and ecosystem sensors and data loggers, data management and analysis
· Water, soil and plant field sampling and laboratory analysis
· Scenario development and GIS mapping for land management assessments
· Cooperation in the preparation of project deliverables and scientific publications
· Cooperation with local stakeholders
Position Specific Required Qualifications:
· BSc in Environmental/Agricultural/Earth/Soil/Geographical Sciences/Engineering (or related) – for the RTS rank
· Experience with the analysis of physical and chemical soil properties in the lab
· Experience with plant observations in the field (phenology, leaf conductance, leaf area index)
· Experience in GIS analysis
· Experience with data loggers for hydro-meteorological monitoring
· Experience with data management and analysis of water balance components in agro-ecosystems
· Excellent English (written & spoken).
· Strong organisational, analytical, problem-solving, communication skills; ability to work in a multicultural environment.
Position Specific Desired Qualifications:
· MSc in a related field
· Good computational skills (e.g., R, python)
· Proven experience in environmental field research and in interdisciplinary teams
· High level of problem-solving
· Greek will be considered an advantage
· Drivers’ license

Duration of appointment:
The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of 12 months with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds.
Remuneration details:
Salary Band: CYI2(1-13) for Research Technical Assistant and CYI3(1-14) for Research Technical Scientist
Position’s Starting Salary: CYI2.1 – €24851.71 for Research Technical Assistant and CYI3.1 – €30323.41 for Research Technical Scientist
