Position Title: Research Assistant

Start: As Soon As Possible

Contract: CDD 6months

Short Job Description:

UM6P seeks a Research Assistant to support cross-project work in hydrology, hydroclimate, and remote sensing. You will conduct field work (instrument deployments, gauging, sampling, surveys), and manage sensors, and process/analyse remote-sensing and hydroclimatic datasets (satellite, reanalysis, station networks) using Python/R, GIS, and Google Earth Engine. You’ll also assist with hydrological modelling, visualization, and concise reporting.

Key duties:

The work to be performed will include:

  • Conduct field work: install/maintain sensors (flow, weather, soil), perform gauging, sampling, and site surveys in river and mountain environments.
  • Operate field instrumentation: data loggers, GPS, microclimate stations, and gas-flux/soil-respiration chambers; perform calibrations and onsite QA/QC.
  • Plan field campaigns: logistics, safety plans, permits, equipment prep, and post-trip inventories; drive to remote sites (valid driver’s license required).
  • Ingest & manage data: organize time series from stations/reanalysis, remote sensing products, and survey datasets with clear metadata and version control.
  • Process remote-sensing data: compute indices and maps (e.g., veg/soil/moisture/temperature) using GEE, Python/R, and GIS.
  • Analyse hydroclimatic datasets: precipitation/temperature/streamflow/soil moisture; build tidy workflows, QA/QC, and basic statistics.
  • Build reproducible code: notebooks/scripts, documentation, and automation for routine data pipelines.
  • Produce deliverables: figures, maps, dashboards, short technical notes, and contributions to reports/manuscripts.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders: assist workshops/training, capture field knowledge, and translate results into management-ready summaries.

Criteria of the candidate:

BSc/MSc in Environmental Science/ Hydrology/ Geography or related field, strong mountain fieldwork, skills in Python or R and GIS, and readiness to travel with valid driver’s license.

Skills:

We are searching for a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate, who should have:

  • Experience with remote sensing data
  • Experience in data handling and processing
  • Experience with MATLAB and Python is highly appreciated.

About IWRI:

IWRI is a transversal structure across several UM6P Programs. Research within the center is organized around several major areas that aim to ensure the challenging Food and Water security goal in Africa, with a special focus on developing methods/tools that use multi-source remotely, sensed data. The research aims to improve our understanding of the integrated functioning of continental surfaces and their interaction with climate and humans, with emphasis on sustainable management of natural resources (soil, land, water, agriculture) in the context of Climate Change. One of the center’s goals is to provide a set of services and operational products to users (local, national, and international) that aid in the decision support of water and food systems.
