As a Research Assistant in Marine Fisheries at Wageningen Marine Research (WMR), you will be involved in various fisheries research projects. This challenging and varied position means you will often be out at sea. With your practical experience on the water and with fish, you ensure that the right research can be carried out effectively.
Your tasks and responsibilities as a Research Assistant include:
- Collecting fish and fisheries data during monitoring activities (this takes place at fish auctions, in our research facilities, as well as on board fishing and research vessels);
- Carrying out various fisheries research activities during sea trips or in WMR’s research facilities, following established protocols. The duration of sea trips may vary from one day to several weeks;
- Recording research data in WMR’s software systems and reporting any irregularities.
You will work together with different colleagues in several project teams focused on marine fisheries. Your base of operations will be the office and research facilities of Wageningen Marine Research in IJmuiden.
Your qualities
You are an accurate, proactive, and solution-oriented colleague with strong communication skills and a professional attitude towards fishermen and other stakeholders we collaborate with. You are a team player but can also work independently when you are on board fishing vessels.
You also have:
- A strong interest in fish and fisheries (experience in marine fisheries is an advantage);
- A secondary vocational education (MBO) level of working and thinking;
- Flexibility in your working hours due to multi-day or multi-week sea trips;
- A valid Category B driver’s licence;
- Proficiency in Dutch at level B2.

In addition to these first-rate employee benefits, you will of course receive a good salary. We offer, depending on your experience, a competitive gross salary of between €2.824,- and €3.567,- for a full-time working week of 36 hours, in accordance with the CLA Wageningen Research (scale 6). For multi-day or multi-week sea trips, an additional allowance is provided to compensate for overtime and challenging working conditions. As for your contract, we initially offer a one-year contract that can be extended – if possible within (company) organizational circumstances – on good performance.Of course, we are happy to have a conversation with you if you have any questions about this.
