Would you like to contribute to fish and fisheries research and enjoy working together with others? Then Wageningen Marine Research (WMR) has a great opportunity for you as a Research Assistant in Freshwater Fisheries!

With your practical experience on the water and with fish, you ensure that the right research can be carried out effectively.

Your tasks and responsibilities as a Research Assistant include:

  • Participating in multi-day fieldwork (on the IJsselmeer and Markermeer, occasionally at sea) during several periods throughout the year;
  • Collecting data during fish monitoring activities on research vessels, commercial fishing boats, or in WMR’s research facilities;
  • Organizing the logistics of fieldwork;
  • Recording research data, identifying any irregularities, and providing the data to researchers.

You will collaborate with various colleagues in several project teams focused on freshwater fisheries. Your base of operations will be the office and research facilities of Wageningen Marine Research in IJmuiden.

Your qualities

You are an accurate, proactive, and solution-oriented team player with strong communication skills and a professional attitude towards fishermen. You are also capable of working both independently and collaboratively.

You also have:

  • A completed MBO-4 education and a strong interest in fisheries research. Some experience in (freshwater) fisheries or knowledge of (freshwater) fish species is an advantage;
  • A Category B driver’s licence. A trailer licence (E) and/or a boating licence are considered assets. Obtaining these licences can be supported by WMR;
  • Flexibility in your working hours due to multi-day fieldwork;
  • Proficiency in Dutch at level B2

In addition to these first-rate employee benefits, you will of course receive a good salary. We offer, depending on your experience, a competitive gross salary of between €2.824,- and €3.567,- for a full-time working week of 36 hours, in accordance with the CLA Wageningen Research (scale 6). For multi-day or multi-week sea trips, an additional allowance is provided to compensate for overtime and challenging working conditions. As for your contract, we initially offer a one-year contract that can be extended – if possible within (company) organizational circumstances – on good performance.Of course, we are happy to have a conversation with you if you have any questions about this.
