We seek enthusiastic scholars in Human or Physical Geography or Environmental Studies with an open specialization that is innovative in teaching and connecting with both undergraduate and graduate students. The full-time position is a renewable yearly appointment subject to annual review based on performance, need for services and available funding. A promotion to senior lecturer is possible after five years of exemplary service. Candidates that have at least 5 years of teaching experience in higher education, have evidence of implementing active learning in the classroom, and have a proven record of service within a department may be eligible for consideration of the rank of Senior Lecturer upon hire with approval of the University. Successful candidates will most often contribute to high-enrollment undergraduate courses in Human or Physical Geography or Environmental Studies, and courses in their area of specialization as needed. Specifically, depending on their expertise, the candidate will teach large sections of GEOG 1010 Global Geography, GEOG 1020 Global Systems – Weather and Climate, or GEOG 1030 Global Systems – Land and Water, all of which are important core curriculum courses at Auburn University. In addition, candidates will have the opportunity to teach or develop courses in their area of specialization. The successful candidate will be expected to: 1) Teach two or three undergraduate courses in Geography and Environmental Studies or related areas each semester; 2) Develop and implement innovative and interactive teaching strategies; 3) Engage in curriculum development and contribute to program improvements; 4) Foster a welcoming learning environment that supports Auburn’s land-grant mission; 5) Participate in departmental meetings and university service activities as needed. While not a requirement, it is desirable that candidates evidentiarily illustrate experience in research methods, implementation of active learning in large lecture-style classrooms, experience in developing courses with multiple modalities, and a successful track record of student recruitment, success and retention. In addition, candidates with a strong background in quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, and/or GIS will have the opportunity to contribute to field-based or research methods courses. If desired, the successful candidate will be encouraged to pursue their own record of scholarly contributions to geography and environmental studies and their efforts to publish results of their own research, while similarly mentoring students in publishing research, and such efforts will be valued and acknowledged in annual reviews. Complete applications must include: 1) the applicant’s curriculum vitae, 2) copies of transcripts, 3) names and contact information of three professional references, 4) a 1-page cover letter, and 5) a 2-page statement of teaching philosophy that reflects the candidate’s approach to education and outlines how the candidate implements these in the classroom.
