JOB DESCRIPTION
This position will assist in the operation and maintenance of the Agency’s 80+ surface water gauging station network to include the installation of new gauging stations. This position may require you to operate a state owned or leased vehicle. Therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary responsibilities of this position will be to assist in conducting flow measurements and retrieving stage data from VADEQ operated stream gauges every 6 to 8 weeks. This often includes conducting extreme condition flow measurements at network sites during floods or droughts. The position also assists with processing, verifying, and publishing of current statistical flow data for publication in the annual “USGS Water Resources Data – Virginia” report.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Fundamental knowledge of surface water hydrology, hydraulic principles, and stream flow measuring methods and techniques.
• Working knowledge of intermediate mathematics and statistical analysis.
• Some knowledge of and familiarity with land surveying techniques.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively use computer systems and software to include Microsoft Office products and statistical software.
• Able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and demonstrate strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Able to physically perform manual labor, lift heavy objects, work in confined spaces, and at heights.
• Must be willing and able to work independently with minimal supervision as well as be an integral part of a fast-paced productive team.
• No professional licensure is required.
• Must obtain Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) training/certification within 12 months of being hired into the position (pending funding availability and acceptance by the USGS) and maintain biannual refresher certification.
• Able to obtain confined space entry certification and complete the Virginia Safety and Boating Course within 12 months of being hired.
• This position may require you to operate a state owned or leased vehicle. Therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
• Must be willing and able to travel monthly for several nights at a time state-wide.
• Must pass U.S. Department of Interior criminal background check.
