Summary Statement

This position supports the Water Supply Assessment & Protection Section of the Commercial and Government Services Section in DNREC’s Division of Water. Hydrologists provide technical expertise needed to protect and promote the wise use of the state’s water resources. This position requires good communication skills, because they interact with the public, private consultants, municipalities, service providers, agricultural cooperators, and members of the regulated community. Responsibilities include reviewing/analyzing analytical data, regulatory review of permit applications, conducting resource assessments and investigations. Duties may also include maintaining databases and participating in public outreach and education events.

Essential Functions

  • Collects, analyzes, and interprets field samples, scientific literature and statistical data. 
     
  • Supervises and documents the installation of wells; inspects and compiles data regarding existing wells, waste disposal sites, and underground storage facilities.
     
  • Summarizes data used in studies, projects, plans, specifications and research.
     
  • Performs mathematical calculations to aid in the selection of alternatives.
     
  • Reviews and comments on permit applications.
     
  • Provides technical and regulatory information.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Hydrologist II
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Geology, Hydrology, or related field.
  2. Six months experience in hydrogeology and stratigraphy.
  3. Six months experience in collecting hydrologic field data such as geologic descriptions, water levels and water samples.
  4. Six months experience in interpreting laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
  5. Six months experience in technical report writing.
  6. Knowledge of analyzing and interpreting hydrogeologic data and making technical recommendations.
