Role Responsibilities

The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation is seeking a motivated Farm Water Supply Specialist.  This position will provide technical support to agricultural producers and stakeholders in the southern region with constructing, protecting and maintaining farm water supplies, such as dugouts or water wells for the purposes of livestock watering and farm site development.

This position supports the growth of a sustainable, competitive agriculture industry by addressing farm water issues including supplies, conservation, drought and variable climate impacts, water quality, treatment and protection. As a member of the Farm Water Supply section, the Farm Water Supply Specialist works with a provincial team of specialists. The Farm Water Supply Specialist participates in projects relating to technology transfer, tool development and program development and delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical advice regarding on-farm water supply system design, construction, management, maintenance and trouble shooting.
  • Assess on-farm water management (supply and quality) issues and develop long term sustainable solutions.
  • Provide advice and assistance to agricultural producers and multi-stakeholder partnerships in the development of drought proofing water sources.
  • Provide support, assistance and technical expertise regarding environmental risk assessment and mitigation options for water related activities.
  • Evaluate new technologies and equipment for on-farm water supplies.
  • Provide technical assessment of farm water management issues on topics such as dugouts, water wells, livestock watering, cyanobacteria, and water needs for small market gardens.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirement for this Role:

  • A 2-year diploma in water, agriculture or environmental sciences is required.
  • Plus, six years of experience (groundwater or surface water projects, project management, technical assessments, agriculture incentive or education programs, or a related area).
  • A valid Driver’s License is required for travel within Alberta.


Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Preference will be given to those with the following experience:

  • Practical knowledge and experience planning and developing constructed on-farm water supply systems, specifically dugouts, water wells and spring developments.
  • Knowledge of surface and groundwater systems in southern Alberta.


The following will be considered assets for this position:

  • Familiarity and knowledge of Alberta’s agriculture industry and production systems.
  • Familiarity of legislation, programs and policies affecting the development and management of agricultural water supplies in Alberta.
  • Related field experience in the subject areas and within agricultural or rural settings.
  • Strong verbal and written communication of technical on-farm water supply information to agricultural producers.

  • Office located Lethbridge: Agriculture Centre, (5401-1 Ave S., Lethbridge, AB).
  • Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week (permanent full time).
  • Monday to Friday (8:15 am- 4:30 pm).
  • Travel: Some travel up to 25% will be required.
