Job description
The role of a Hydrology officer contributes to managing our water resources, responding to environmental incidents, and managing the risk of flooding. Your responsibilities will be varied and always rewarding and you will be working with the full range of hydrological conditions, covering both high and low flows.
Your day-to-day tasks will include:
- Provide hydrological data, information and support for both internal and external stakeholders.
- Assist with monitoring, reporting and analysing the state of the hydrological environment. This will include the production of regular water situation summaries and ad hoc reports.
- Contribute to maintaining our hydrometric data quality, working with others in the team to improve our hydrological data. This will help with meeting several key performance indicators.
- Work closely with other team members to deliver hydrological analysis and interpretation across the full flow range from drought to flood.
- Participate in monitoring catchment response, to enable us to give the appropriate considerations for permitting and contribute to the management of water resources.
- Assist with providing technical information to others who are working with communities and partners to protect and enhance the water environment, having to target your communications to meet varying levels of technical capability.
- Support our contribution to incident response ensuring that we provide timely, accurate, and comprehensible analysis and interpretation of catchment response.
The team
The Hydrology and Water and Metal Mines team is multifunctional, made up of two distinct but linked disciplines. The team has three hydrology posts, you will be supported by a Technical Specialist, and a Technical Officer, both of whom will help guide your training and development. The Water and Metal Mines part of the team deliver the mine water project to clean up rivers polluted by metals from the abandoned mines.
Experience/skills required
You will be a competent and experienced person who is versatile, self-motivated and can quickly fit in and contribute to the work of our busy team. We’re seeking a hydrologist with experience in the analysis and reporting of hydrological data and information.
You’ll be qualified to at least degree standard (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline and possess proven ability and/or knowledge of:
- Data information and management.
- Hydrometric data quality assurance and improvements.
- Using basic statistics and graphics to determine trends and relationships in numerical data.
- Standard office software and some previous experience in use of GIS or other mapping software.
Other key requirements include excellent communication skills, confident use of IT, along with a passion for analysis and problem-solving. You should be able to work well as part of a team across different departments but also work independently by managing your own workload.
