About the job  

As a Water Futures Modelling Specialist, you will play a key role in shaping South Australia’s long-term water security by leading the development and application of integrated water management models that inform strategic decision-making. This role will see you collaborate across SA Water and with key government and industry partners to evaluate water availability, system performance, and future supply and demand scenarios.

You will utilise your expertise in data analytics, water resources modelling, and spatial analysis to provide technical insight into adaptive planning, system resilience, and the identification of new water options. Your work will directly support the development of regional Water Resilience Frameworks and adaptive plans that guide investment, planning, and operational decisions to secure South Australia’s water future.

You are an experienced modelling professional with a strong understanding of water systems, data analysis, and strategy development. You thrive in roles that combine technical rigour with purpose, translating complex information into practical recommendations that shape long-term outcomes for communities, industry, and the environment.

Your analytical mindset and collaborative approach enable you to work effectively across diverse teams and disciplines. You are proactive, adaptable, and driven by continuous improvement, with a passion for applying modelling and data to real-world challenges.

About Science and Strategy

The Science and Strategy group employs scientific approaches to address present and upcoming challenges. They execute a strategy driven by customer preferences to elevate the SA Water brand and position us for future success.

In addition, your responsibilities will include: 

Fostering trust with our people, customers and community by providing expert advice and service that ensure we effectively communicate and engage audiences with our business strategy and its delivery across South Australia, every day. 

You will: 

  • Lead the development and delivery of integrated water resource modelling and assessment programs.
  • Develop and apply new system models in collaboration with SA Water and key partners.
  • Undertake analysis of current and future supply and demand scenarios to inform water security strategies.
  • Apply advanced data analytics, spatial and statistical techniques to support modelling and planning decisions.
  • Provide technical guidance and assurance to ensure modelling consistency across SA Water and partner agencies.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to translate complex modelling outcomes into clear, actionable insights that inform strategy.

Your success in this role will come from: 

  • Hold relevant science, engineering or related qualifications and/or industry knowledge, and understanding of relevant technical, regulatory and policy requirements.
  • An understanding of the SA water sector, water resource management and strategic planning processes.
  • Highly developed water resources modelling, analysis and planning skills and demonstrated capacity to successfully manage assessment and resolution of complex issues across multiple systems and regions.
  • Highly developed organisational skills, including the ability to prioritise and multi-task.
  • Strong data analytics skills, including experience with spatial and statistical analysis, data visualisation, and use of tools such as ArcGIS, Python, R and Power BI.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and an ability to clearly articulate messages to a variety of audiences.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, including a demonstrated ability to influence internal and external stakeholders, effect long lasting relationships, and drive mutually acceptable outcomes is desirable.
