Position Responsibilities

Position SummaryThe Department of Natural Resources and Society (NRS) at the University of Idaho (UI) invites applications for a tenure-track or tenured Assistant or Associate Professor of Natural Resource Policy and Environmental Management position (rank and tenure are negotiable based on how the candidate meets the criteria outlined in department and college bylaws).We seek a social scientist who can apply an empirical research portfolio to pressing natural resources and environmental issues relevant across Idaho or the broader region. We especially welcome candidates with expertise in sustainable rural communities, collaborative resource management, policy analysis, or environmental decision-making in resource-dependent regions.Candidates with demonstrated experience in multidisciplinary and community-based research that span the social, natural, and physical sciences will be reviewed favorably. This position is open to candidates who use a range of methodological approaches to social science, including economics, policy sciences, sociology, human geography, urban/regional planning or decision sciences.The successful candidate will be expected to develop an externally funded research program that advances theory and best practices surrounding natural resource management, including evaluating the impact of emerging management trends or policies on resource dependent communities across the region. They should be able to articulate how their research and teaching contribute to the university land grant mission, including pressing natural resources and environmental issues relevant to Idaho.The candidate should demonstrate excellence in teaching and mentoring both undergraduate and graduate students. Teaching expectations will include 3 courses per year that contribute to the department’s academic programs in the NRS department and campus-wide Environmental Science program, undergraduate and graduate levels. Mentoring expectations include graduate students in both M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs.This position is based in Moscow, Idaho.

Qualifications

Minimum Education/Degree RequiredListed degree qualification is required at time of hire.
Required QualificationsRequired Education: Ph.D. in Natural Resources or Environmental Science or closely related fieldRequired Qualifications for Assistant Professor level:Experience implementing and maintaining a program of scholarship in natural resources and environmental policy, planning, and managementExperience teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level, including online course deliveryAdditional Required Qualifications for Associate Professor level:Experience in teaching and mentoringExperience in research and serviceExperience securing external fundingExperience administering research projects and outputs.
Preferred QualificationsInterest in natural resource issues in Idaho and the western United States.Applied research focus on policy solutions to manage forests, rangelands, and/or wildlife.Expertise in sustainable rural communities, collaborative resource management, or resource management among resource dependent communities.A publication record consistent with career stage.Evidence of successful collaboration with natural and social scientists across disciplines.Demonstrated ability to contribute to a learning community of members from a range of backgrounds and experiences and to foster a sense of belonging for all students.
