Broad Scope & Function | The Geologist/GIS (geographic information system) Specialists provide support and advice services for applied research projects conducted by OWP on water quality and water resources problems. This position includes engineering geology, stormwater, computer programming, water resources, GIS, and database specialties. The series includes positions involved in physical planning and construction, administration and conduct of research, and dissemination of results. The position may include providing water sector utilities with training and technical assistance services for building their technical, managerial, financial, and workforce capacity. Emphasis is on securing, administering, and managing projects in the areas of environmental and water resources research. This position assists the Director of OWP or a designee in preparation of proposals, planning, organizing, supervising, and/or performing work requiring specialized skills in stormwater, engineering geology, databases, GIS, and programming; represents OWP at meetings and conferences involving campus, university, state, and federal entities in matters related to the subject research; and manages projects and assures the quality of the products of the group. |
Reporting Relationship | This position reports directly to and receives general direction from the Associate Director of Research for OWP or their designee. |
Salary | $8,636 – $12,954 per month |

Duties and Responsibilities | Coordinates multi-entity research projects, including liaison between University researchers, contractors, and outside agencies and consultants.Administers research projects, including preparation of contract documents, day-to-day contract enforcement, and evaluation of project results.Provides engineering geology and water resources advice to design, implement, and complete research projects.Identifies the need to incorporate research findings in design and implementation of environmental and water resources projects.Conceptualizes, codes, debugs, implements, and documents database and GIS applications. The subject matter of these databases includes water quality standards and objectives, water quality monitoring data, regulations, and geographical and spatial data.Assists and participates in other projects with significant geological components, including but not limited to:Erosion control/soil stabilization pilot studies;Field reviews of geomorphology of project sites to assess erosion potential and appropriate mitigation methods;Training activities for employees of state and local agencies in soil stabilization.Prepares reports and presentations of findings to University, contractor, and other interested parties and groups.Participates in conferences and workshops to transmit research results.Assists with the preparation of proposals.Participates in applied research need analysis for state and local agencies. |
