Advertised Job SummaryThe Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of South Carolina in Columbia is seeking qualified applicants for an open rank tenured or tenure-track faculty position. We seek a scholar whose research merges water resources engineering with artificial intelligence and data science to advance smart and sustainable infrastructure systems.Applicants should possess a Ph.D. in civil engineering or a closely related field by the start date of employment. They should have a demonstrated record of research accomplishments and a strong capacity for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses. Applicants at the senior level must also have a record of sustained excellence in teaching and research, including competitive external funding, national and international service, and interdisciplinary collaboration.The ideal candidate will develop an internationally recognized and externally funded research program focusing on the development of tools for water management, including real-time flood forecasting, digital twinning of hydraulic and hydrologic systems, predictive modeling of hydrologic extremes, and strategic water use to support economic development (e.g. water use for data centers and other industrial facilities). This work will discover new knowledge and develop tools for infrastructure planning considering hydrologic hazards such as coastal and flash floods, which are of relevance to South Carolina.This position complements the department’s strengths in water resources engineering and contributes to our broader focus on intelligent and sustainable infrastructure. The successful candidate will have opportunities to collaborate with researchers across the college and the University’s AI institute engaged in smart infrastructure and digital twins.Candidates will be expected to teach in the department’s undergraduate and graduate programs and collaborate with researchers across the Molinaroli College of Engineering and Computing.The University of South Carolina is designated as a “high research activity” university by the Carnegie Foundation.
