Senior Consultant Water Assessments (EIA)

APEM Limited

Manchester, UK 🇬🇧

Home-based/Remote

About The Role

Are you an experienced environmental consultant ready to take the next step in your career? Do you enjoy working across multiple disciplines and bringing together technical experts to deliver projects that really make a difference?

We’re looking for a Senior Consultant – Water Assessments to join our Environmental Appraisal team within APEM’s Water Management Division. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with a strong technical background who enjoys coordinating complex projects, managing inputs across multiple specialisms and supporting clients to make evidence-based environmental decisions.

You’ll work alongside Principal Consultants and technical specialists across areas such as water quality, hydrology, hydromorphology, flood risk, groundwater and aquatic ecology. Your work will span a wide variety of project types and scales – from Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and Water Framework Directive (WFD) studies, to Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRA) and environmental appraisals for nationally significant infrastructure.

This is a varied and rewarding role where no two days are the same. You’ll blend technical delivery with project coordination, data analysis and report writing – all while developing your project management and client-facing skills. As part of a growing team, there’s clear scope to progress towards Principal level, with support, mentoring and exposure to some of the most exciting and high-profile environmental consultancy projects in the UK.

What we’re looking for

You’ll need to bring:

  • MSc or PhD in Environmental Science (or related discipline), or equivalent professional experience
  • At least 3 years’ experience in an environmental consultancy or similar setting
  • Strong understanding of environmental legislation, particularly the Water Framework Directive (WFD)
  • Experience coordinating and contributing to water-related environmental assessments (EIA, WFD, HRA)
  • Excellent organisational, analytical and written communication skills
  • Ability to work across multiple technical disciplines and manage competing priorities
  • Confidence engaging with clients, regulators and stakeholders
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel

It’s a bonus if you have:

  • Line management or mentoring experience
  • Experience delivering complex or high-profile projects
  • Membership of a relevant professional body
  • Proficiency with GIS software
  • A full UK driving licence
