This position’s primary purpose is to perform hydrologic fieldwork and is responsible for data collection in support of the Department’s programs. Specifically groundwater level measurements, stream flow measurements, well discharge measurements, plus the occasional assistance with the operation & maintenance, downloading, and uploading of transducer well data from well sites.

This position is expected to maintain and input data into ADWR databases. Drafting of hydrologic reports and field summaries for management and the general public. Must be able to four-wheel drive off road to many well sites, work outdoors in all types of weather conditions, walk with water-level measurement equipment sometimes over a half a mile to well site and lift equipment up to 10-20 lbs. with flexibility to maneuver around well site.

The person in this position may occasionally assist with the repair and installation of automated well sites and therefore be able to lift supplies/equipment up to 60 lbs. Contacts owners for permission to measure, travels to well sites to make measurements using electrical sounders, steel tape, etc. and maintains contact and well site information in Master Section files.

This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department’s business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures. A minimum of two days on-site at the ADWR office per week is required.

Job Duties:

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for performing timely field investigation in accordance with ADWR guidelines and procedures. Measures groundwater levels in wells. Identifies and makes arrangements to measure water levels in wells and conduct well site inventories for inclusion into ADWR-GWSI database.
  • Enters measured water level data and related site data into the GWSI database and owner monitoring permission information into ADWRs databases. Contributes to the development and maintenance of GWSI  and monitoring site files: updates well site data such as photos, site and water use, well location/maps, pump/lift data, MP information and datums, log data, well construction, and other hydrologic parameters as needed.
  • Assists with the installation of automated groundwater level monitoring devices into wells. Includes well site preparation and installation of pressure transducers or other such automated monitoring devices, GOES radios, data loggers, solar panels, shelters, voltage regulators, etc. Visits automated well sites to download recorded water level data from data logger systems and operation and maintenance (O&M) as needed.
  • Responsible for calibration and maintaining records of data collection equipment such as electric sounders, electric tapes, steel tapes, etc. in accordance with USGS Technical Procedures and ADWR standards.
  • Responsible for the timely preparation of reports/recommendations involving water resources management issues. Responsible for compiling, analyzing, and interpreting water data from a variety of sources and databases, including field measurements, calculations, and observations and evaluation of historical records, maps, aerial photographs, and remotely sensed data output.
  • Measures stream flows as directed. Measures discharges from pumping wells using appropriate equipment such as ultrasonic flow meter as directed to measure water well discharge rates for compliance and other hydrologic data collection purposes.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge:

  • Practical working knowledge of groundwater and techniques for measuring, sampling or investigating groundwater
  • Knowledge of the behavior and occurrence of water in nature
  • How monitoring and sampling programs work
  • Information sources, research methods, and techniques utilized in water resources management
  • Computer applications and equipment, including Excel, Word, Access, Oracle and GPS
  • Current concepts and practices in water resource management
  • System of land/property description and identification used in the State of Arizona

Skills:

  • The use of field equipment and field testing/measurement activities
  • Coordinating and conducting field investigations and maintaining an effective working relationship with team members, agency employees and with the public
  • Preparing timely reports/recommendations involving water resources issues of highly complex, sensitive and visible nature
  • Drawing maps or sketches based on survey data, aerial photographs, and field observations/measurements
  • Using spreadsheets and databases to organize, analyze and interpret water resource management data
  • Applying a multi-disciplinary approach to resolve complex, sensitive, and/or visible water resource management issue
  • Must have the skills to be able to read and interpret hydrogeologic reports and data.
  • Must be proficient in the use of a personal computer to query and create relational databases of monitoring data, well construction, and other hydrogeologic information.
  • Coordinating and conducting field investigations and maintaining an effective working relationship with team members, agency employees and with the public.
  • Effective written and verbal communication.

Ability to:

  • Research, apply concepts and carry out instructions, and to coordinate numerous activities as directed by supervisor.
  • Use computers and analytical methods to retrieve, organize, and present data
  • Use and be acquainted with common tools and field services instruments. (sounder, steel tape, hand tools, various discharge measurement devices, transducers, GPS, topographic maps, computers and 4×4 trucks)
  • Drive off-road 4×4 to well sites, lift equipment 10-20 lbs. with flexibility to maneuver around well site.
  • Mix concrete, pour well pad, install sounding tube, well shelter, mast and other automated equipment
  • Apply concepts and instruction provided within the context of the data collection duties assigned
  • Interpret/explain and ensure compliance with state and Federal water management statutes and Department policies and procedures
  • Be polite and courteous, as this position will often deal with the public.
  • Interpret geologic, hydrologic and topographic maps and reports
  • Be comfortable with working outdoors and traveling statewide and be able to adapt to changing conditions.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in geology, hydrology, or a related field, or a related field, and two years of hydrologic or a related experience; or a Master’s degree in one of the above fields.
