Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum 1 year of related work experience preferred.
  • Any equivalent combination of certifications, education, or experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities for the position.

Licenses, Registration, and Certifications

  • Within twelve months of hire, must possess one of the following licenses:

o State of Colorado Distribution Level 1, or

o State of Colorado Water Treatment Operator Class D.

  • Must obtain a FEMA ICS 100,200,700 within 36 months of appointment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class ‘R’ Colorado driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record at time of hire.

Respiratory Protection Testing

  • This position is subject to respiratory protection testing as directed per Denver Water Physician.

This is a limited-term position with an expected end date of 12/31/2027 This date may be extended.

Position Summary

The Water Quality Technician is an entry level team member working under direct supervision, training and performing the following assigned routine duties:

Sampling and monitoring the potable and recycling distribution systems. Perform inspection and disinfection of potable distribution system infrastructure and treated water reservoirs. Carry out water quality investigations resulting from customer complaints and emergency response situations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform physical/video inspections of distribution system infrastructure, disinfection and de-chlorination of water mains, conduits, storage reservoirs, and monitors environmental discharges.
  • Participate in and monitor work to ensure safe and proper work practices and procedures are implemented, adopted, and followed.
  • Utilize various software programs (LIMS, mField, Microsoft Office Tokay, Eris) as applicable to complete daily assignments.
  • Champion the utilization and implementation of Continuous Improvement tools.
  • Load and lift various items such as containers, instruments, or other equipment.
  • Willingness to drive with trailers and perform work in various outdoor conditions.
  • Participate in emergency response and on-call duties that include nights and weekends.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and cross train across Water Quality as needed.
  • Collect Distribution System samples using appropriate sample collection SOP’s and standard methods.
  • Analyzes samples in total chlorine, temperature, pH, conductivity, turbidity, alkalinity, total phosphorous and ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, dissolved oxygen, and bacteriological analyses.
  • Calibrate and maintain instruments and equipment used for field applications.
  • Prepare media, reagents, standard solutions, and sample bottles. Work in accordance with prescribed safety regulations.
  • Perform investigation activities for less complex customer inquiries or water quality surveys, cross connection control site surveys/audits, backflow installation inspections, Regulation 84 compliance, leak investigations, emergency threat and environmental contamination events to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Screen water quality and cross connection control inquiries and/or CORA requests by way of the Water Quality Inquiry Desk.

This Limited-term appointment is within the competitive service. Limited-term regular employees have the same rights and privileges and are subject to the same requirements under the Personnel Policies as regular employees. Limited-term appointments are used to fill positions for projects that are expected to take two or more years for completion, but which are clearly not continuing in nature and will terminate upon completion of the work. Denver Water also reserves the right to terminate the position if the Limited-term employee’s role on the project is completed or it is determined that there is no longer a need for the position on the project.

Individuals who are selected for Limited-term employment with Denver Water will be appointed for a pre-determined period of time depending on project needs, but that period may be shortened or extended depending on project needs. A limited-term appointment will end when the employee’s role on a project is completed or it is determined there is no longer a need for the limited-term position on the project.

The first six months of employment for a Limited-term employee is an introductory period. During this period, your employment can be terminated at any time, and are entitled to the same limited protection and procedures provided to introductory employees.

Compensation: Limited-term employees are eligible for within-grade increases through Denver Water’s annual merit program. Limited-term employees are able to compete for other Limited-term or Regular status positions if seeking other opportunities.
