Job Summary
Join a mission-driven team in the Environmental Health division and contribute to protecting, maintaining, and improving the health of all Minnesotans. This position will play a key role in coordinating the state’s efforts to understand, characterize, mitigate, and manage public environmental health risks from of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The PFAS Coordinator role exists to perform administrative, coordination, and applied research duties to promote and ensure integrated management of PFAS activities across MDH’s Environmental Health Division and with other parts of MDH, other state agencies, and federal and local partners to serve as a technical resource and conduit for information between the MDH programs, leadership, and subject matter experts and key external parties on issues related to PFAS.
Primary responsibilities:
- Provide technical input into development and implementation of communication strategies to increase public understanding of PFAS prohibitions in Minnesota, particularly the PFAS in Products Bans.
- Conduct comprehensive research to assess and identify credible resources that help determine products or components that contain or do not contain PFAS chemicals and other hazardous substances.
- Collect, evaluate, and provide technical information to support Minnesota’s PFAS and Products Initiatives, including providing expertise on PFAS-free alternatives.
- Establish clear goals and objectives for the MDH’s contributions to Minnesota’s joint PFAS and Products Initiatives, ensuring alignment with public health priorities.
- Provide guidance and support to MDH staff at all levels on PFAS-related issues, ensuring clear communication and accurate information.
This position will have the option of teleworking; however, it will be based on the business needs of the unit and is at supervisory discretion and only up to 50% of the time.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

- 3 years of experience in environmental health, public health, or environmental science, which include demonstrated expertise in assessing risks of hazardous substances like PFAS and environmental risk communication.
A degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, Environmental Science or closely related field may count towards professional experience as follows:
Bachelor’s = 12 months.
Master’s = 18 months.
Doctoral = 24 months.
Additional minimum qualifications to be assessed during the interview:
- Strong research skills with the ability to collect, evaluate, and synthesize technical information.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate and collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams and with external stakeholders, including state agencies, federal organizations, local partners, and the public.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical information to diverse audiences, including decision-makers, the public, and scientific communities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, Environmental Science or related field.
- In-depth understanding of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), their environmental impacts, and public health risks.
- Demonstrated understanding of basic scientific principles and well-developed qualitative and quantitative analytical skills sufficient to evaluate program information and reports and provide analysis findings.
- Experience in policy analysis and program evaluation related to environmental health or hazardous substances.
- Ability to interpret state and federal government regulations and analyze government programs and policies for effectiveness.
- Project planning and management skills sufficient to lead teams, set agendas, and resolve conflicts, and to organize projects and develop recommendations to ensure successful project completion.

Must successfully pass a background and reference check.
This employment does not require a valid driver’s license, but it does demand occasional travel, which the candidate will be responsible for meeting.
The successful candidate under U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services regulations must be able to accept work in the U.S. by the day employment begins. The agency is unable to offer H-1B sponsorship
