Description
Civil Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for a Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
Reporting to the Principal Investigator of the OPEN-Franc project, the candidate will help develop workflows that streamline the configuration of process-based models, integrating topography, soils, vegetation, and hydrologic features at multiple spatial scales. They will also design a multi-scale, multi-variate benchmarking system to confront models with observational data, enabling robust diagnostics and parameter sensitivity analyses.
The position of is a full-time appointment, 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 7 hours per day. Flexible work hours and remote working arrangements are possible to accommodate critical deadlines.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Ensure high-quality research output in computational hydrology and hydraulics.
- Maintain effective coordination across OPEN-Franc governance structures.
- Support the Principal Investigator in achieving project milestones.
- Facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration among academic, government, and industry partners.
- Contribute to Canada’s national efforts in climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction.
- Plan, organize, and conduct independent and collaborative research in hydrology and hydraulics.
- Evaluate large-domain, multi-model floodplain frameworks.
- Develop model-agnostic workflows for configuring process-based models using geospatial data.
- Design and implement multi-scale, multi-variate benchmarking systems.
- Track and document activities across multiple committees (Executive, Research Management, Indigenous Stewardship, Advisory).
- Facilitate communication and collaboration between thematic Working Groups.
- Assist the PI with project planning, reporting, and documentation.
- Help manage timelines and deliverables to meet critical deadlines.
- Support flexible work arrangements and remote collaboration as needed.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- PhD in Civil/Environmental Engineering, Hydrology, or related field
- 1-3 years of postdoctoral research experience in hydrodynamic or hydrological modeling
- Strong background in hydrology, hydraulics and fluid mechanics and water resources management.
- Proficiency in programming (Python, Fortran, C/C++ or other languages) and numerical modeling of environmental systems
- Demonstrated experience with HPC environments, parallel computing, and open-source software development
- Track record of high-impact peer-reviewed publications and invited presentations
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada is an asset
- Excellent communication, analytical, and teamwork skills
