Job Purpose
To supplement the skillset and offering of the existing SLR Africa Water and Wastewater Engineering team based in Fourways. This role will include leading surface water modelling and engineering projects, specifically those related to flood modelling, water balance modelling, dam break and water quality modelling and more general hydrology and hydraulic modelling. All aspects of the projects will need to be covered, including proposal development, general project management, client correspondence, as well as providing guidance and assistance to more junior staff. The candidate would ideally also support business development to ensure growth in this specialist field for the company.
Responsibilities:
- Development and interpretation of flood inundation models.
- Providing input on water components for EIA’s and mine waste management projects.
- Development of high-quality project and design technical reports for clients.
- Project management on multi-disciplinary projects; including the management of an internal team and direct liaison with clients and other consulting teams.
- Mentorship and management of junior engineers and hydrologists.
- Site visits and inspections within SA and globally.
- General assistance with broader water engineering activities.
Minimum Requirements:
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or hydrology (or equivalent).
- At least 10 years of experience in water engineering and modelling.
- At least 5 years of experience using HEC-RAS software (or equivalent).
- Conceptual understanding of industrial and mine water management.
- Ability to work and produce deliverables independently.
- Proficient in MS Office programs.
- Valid driver’s license
Other Beneficial Skills/Qualities:
- A masters-level degree or higher;
- Professional registration with a governing body (i.e., ECSA)
- Several years of consulting experience.
- Experience in the following fields and the ability to work independently there-in: Stochastic modelling, climatology, dam break assessments, water balance modelling, surface water impact assessments, modelling non-Newtonian fluids (i.e. tailings), regulatory requirements in the water management space in South Africa, water quality analysis.
- Experience with the following tools/software packages: GIS, PhreeqC, GoldSim, HEC-HMS, CAD, Tuflow, Cormix, Coding (i.e. R/Python), PCSWMM, MUK3D
- Ability to deliver projects within budget and schedule.
- Sound writing and communication skills
- Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work
- Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
