The Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) is an independent government agency which, in partnership with Basin governments, manages the Murray–Darling Basin’s water resources in the national interest. With the enactment of the Water Act 2007, the MDBA was established as an independent expertise-based statutory agency. 

The MDBA aims to achieve a healthy working Basin for the benefit of all Australians. The Murray–Darling Basin contains a rich diversity of natural environments that are unique in Australia and the world. The Basin is also crucial to Australia’s economy and home to 2.3 million Australians, including people from over 50 First Nations. How we manage the Basin as a whole connected system, manage our water carefully, and protect it for future generations is set out in the Murray-Darling Basin Plan.

The position: 
The Murray Assessment Director will:

  • Oversee the River Murray Assessment Process (forecasting states bulk water shares)
  • Provide support to the River Management Accounts (the accounting and sharing of states water under the Murray Darling Basin Agreement)
  • design and implement a range of improvements to meet contemporary accounting, communication, transparency and modelling standards. 
  • be responsible for overseeing environmental accounting and improvements, 
  • be responsible a range of modelling and data services in support 
  • Represent MDBA and joint venture interests with Snowy
  • Work with state agencies to meet their current and future Murray accounting needs
  • Manage a small team

The Director must work closely with the Hydrological Analysis and River Operations branches on behalf of the joint venture of the Commonwealth, NSW, VIC and SA. 

Your key responsibilities in this role are to: 

  • Oversee MDBA assessment processes and identifying opportunities to improve
  • Oversee environmental accounting procedures and documentation
  • Work with a range of internal teams to continually improve accounting practices, tools and outputs for state agencies in their allocation processes.  
  • Document processes and procedures for future training and development training tools to improve training efficiency and outcomes
  • Support modelling and data analysis tasks in conjunction with Hydrological analysis and River Operations branches
  • Support Operations & Water Liaison Working Group (state advisory group) on a range of issues including but not limited to sharing the Murray
  • Represent the MDBA on Snowy water licence issues and Snowy Hydro liaison
