Research Assistant (m/f/d) in the Field of Hydrology
The position is part of the third party-funded BMLEH- project ” I-CRO-LIVE – Enhancing the potentials of underÂutilized local taurine breeds in integrated crop-livestock systems to improve resource efficiency, environmental impact and nutrition security in Benin” and is limited for the duration of three years at the Chair of Land Use Systems with a focus on Agroforestry, Department of Landscape Ecology and Resources Management at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Nutritional Sciences, and Environmental Management. The salary is in accordance with the collective labour agreement of the State of Hessen (E 13 TV-H).
Your tasks at a glance
- Soil sampling to analyse the hydraulic properties of the soil on smallholder farms in Benin
- Quantification of water availability and analysis of hydrological processes and their interactions with agricultural practices
- Close cooperation with other project partners at JLU and Benin universities and mutual support for research activities
- Publication of research results in international peer-reviewed journals
The opportunity to pursue a doctorate is available alongside work on the project
Your qualifications and competences
- Completed university degree (MSc or diploma) in agricultural, environmental, earth, geo sciences or a related field
- In-depth knowledge of soil hydrology, statistical and spatial analysis (R, Python, GIS)
- Technical and analytical skills in field experiments and in the laboratory
- Ability to independently carry out research projects and organise work processes
- Ability to work in a team and communication skills
- Very good presentation skills in spoken and written English
- Basic knowledge of French for communication purposes
- Willingness to undertake extended research stays (up to 3 months at a time) in the study areas in Benin, West Africa, for data collection and to carry out sampling, which can be strenuous at times, under extreme (sub-)tropical condition
