Part-time position with 75 percent of the regular working hours of a full-time employee. The position is fixed-term for three and a half years, subject to the availability of funding, in accordance with § 2 (2) WissZeitVG as part of the newly funded collaborative project “ADAPT – Adaptation to Drought and Extremes: The Surface-Soil-Groundwater Buffer under Climate Stress”. The opportunity of obtaining a doctoral degree in the field of environmental engineering is given.
Extreme weather events such as aridity, drought and heavy rainfall are putting increasing pressure on regional and global water cycles, as well as on water quality in natural ecosystems. In regions experiencing water shortages, management measures that enhance water retention and utilize surface water and advanced treated wastewater for irrigation have the potential to alleviate water stress during prolonged dry periods. To improve water supply security during periods of high demand, the ADAPT sub-project focuses on the reuse of advanced treated wastewater from municipal wastewater treatment plants. The project will assess the increased risk of soil contamination from organic micropollutants arising from irrigation via water reuse. It aims to develop and evaluate a flexible, multi-barrier system that is feasible in terms of process technology at small and medium-sized wastewater treatment plants close to the point of water reuse for irrigation.
Tasks:
- Design and conduct pilot-scale experiments at selected wastewater treatment plants in North Hesse, Germany, to evaluate the effectiveness of physical, oxidative, adsorptive and nature-based processes
- Application and further development of mechanistic modelling approaches to describe substance behaviour within the treatment train
- Close cooperation with other PhD students and investigators involved in the project
- Publication of research results in international peer-reviewed journals
- Participation in project-related seminars, workshops and international conferences, presenting own results
Requirements:
- Completed course of academic study (e. g. Master degree) in environmental engineering, environmental sciences, chemical engineering, process engineering, civil engineering or related fields. The required degree must be available by the recruitment date at the latest.
- In-depth knowledge in the field of water technologies
