A position is available for a project engineer on The City’s River Engineering team. The River Engineering Team works within The City’s Climate and Environment Business Unit, in Planning & Development Services, and works closely with Water Services and Infrastructure Services. On the River Engineering team, you will use and develop your hydrotechnical and civil skills by participating in a wide variety of projects which support river flood resilience, potable water supply, dam safety, asset management, stormwater, environmental sustainability, and emergency management. Primary duties include:

  • Support inspection and management of hydraulic structures through technical work on river asset management and dam safety programs.
  • Conduct applied hydrology analyses, including flood frequency analysis and creation of flow duration curves, to support flood response planning, mapping and infrastructure design.
  • Develop, calibrate and use hydrologic models (Raven) and hydraulic models (HEC-RAS, PC-SWMM).
  • Review development applications in flood hazard areas, with the aim of building resilience with respect to flooding, groundwater, riparian health, morphologic risk, and climate change.
  • Flow monitoring and forecasting, including participation in the River Forecaster-on-Duty rotation to monitor conditions for flood, drought and ice jam risks, annual spring flood response preparations, and emergency response activities through the year as required.
  • Support the development, roll-out and maintenance of a digital flood emergency response tool.
  • Collaborate with other City teams, Calgarians, consultants, academics and others to deliver programs and build Calgary’s resilience, including public engagement and interaction with citizens as required.

Qualifications 

  • A degree in Civil, Water Resources, Environmental Engineering, or a related Engineering field.
  • Current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) complete with practicing status OR licensure and practicing status by the first day of work. Click here for more details.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s License (or provincial equivalent) and access to a personal vehicle for business use OR the ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator’s permit is required.
  • Experience using hydrologic analyses, hydraulic modelling and/or river infrastructure design is required.
  • A graduate degree in Water Resource Engineering, Hydrology or related field is an asset.
  • Experience using hydrologic and hydraulic modelling software (e.g., HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, Raven, FEWS, and/or PCSWMM) is an asset.
  • Experience in Dam Safety and/or Asset Management is an asset.
  • Basic skills in GIS/ArcMap/ArcGISPro is also considered an asset.
  • Strong initiative and commitment to professional excellence and continuous improvement is critical for success on this team.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills is critical for success in this role.

Such arrangements are based on the operational requirements of the position and employee suitability and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.

Note: The position is primarily office-based, with occasional field work for data collection or site inspections.
