The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Aquatic Resources Division as a Watershed Steward, Environmental Planner 3 (EP3). This position will support projects advancing salmon recovery, watershed health, and climate resilience both on and off DNR lands as part of the Watershed Resilience Program team. The successful candidate will lead programmatic efforts in the South Puget Sound watersheds (Puyallup-Chambers Creek and Nisqually) and support Snohomish Watershed projects as needed. They will coordinate with internal and external partners to plan and implement habitat assessment, monitoring, restoration, and resilience projects. They will lead a diverse suite of projects, supporting grant management, outreach, and communication, while also helping to analyze and disseminate spatial and environmental data.

Duties

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the WRP lead in the South Puget Sound, driving implementation of the WRP objectives on the ground within the Nisqually and Puyallup-Chambers Creek Basins
  • Plan and implement Watershed Resilience Program projects and initiatives
  • Participate in team coordination, communications, and strategic planning
  • Coordinate with Tribal co-stewards and internal and external partners, including state agencies, local governments, conservation districts, and nonprofits. 
  • Conduct scientific data collection and analysis, including in rough terrain in forested and aquatic habitats. 
  • Collect and analyze spatial data via GIS 
  • Contract and grant scoping, writing, and management for local, state, and federal grants

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, environmental science, environmental planning, public administration, or public policy with an environmental emphasis, or a closely related field, AND at least two years of professional experience in natural resources, environmental science, environmental planning, public administration, or public policy with an environmental emphasis, or a closely related field.
    OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience leading and facilitating an interdisciplinary team or work groups to achieve desired and productive outcomes.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, or equivalent, programs (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present complex or controversial information in a way that is understandable and nonconfrontational.
  • Skills in managing multiple work assignments and priorities on varied time scales.
  • Skills to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships, to build rapport and partner with local, state, and federal governmental agencies, tribes, and the public regarding issues on habitat protection and restoration.
  • Strong organization and time management skills to effectively prioritize workload and maximize efficiency.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:

  • Work is performed indoors in an office or classroom environment as well as in sometimes isolated, unimproved areas, aquatic habitats, and forest land, which may include inclement weather or access on over-water structures or watercraft.
  • Travel is required about 25% of the time and is typically local or regional (western Washington) to meet with partners, conduct business, or attend or provide training.
  • A valid, unrestricted driver’s license and two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree in natural resource or environmental science, natural resource or environmental planning, or public administration or public policy with an environmental emphasis, or a closely related field.
  • At least three years of professional experience in natural resource or environmental science, natural resource or environmental planning, or public administration or environmental policy.
  • Experience applying knowledge of Washington fish and wildlife biology, habitat science, and ecology to anticipate fish, wildlife, and habitat needs, potential impacts, and likely remedies.
  • Experience using negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Experience with web or online communication platforms.
  • Experience with data tracking, data analysis, and spatial mapping systems (GIS).
  • Knowledge of the watershed restoration and management, or experience in riparian health or forest health.
  • Knowledge of natural resource laws, policies, and programs and how these affect and/or enable fish, wildlife, and habitat conservation in Washington State, and the ability to interpret and apply them to achieve expected results.
