We are looking for a person who is strong in research, well established in teaching and whose previous activities in the field of sustainable and transformative water systems engineering can be demonstrated through relevant research activities and publications with international visibility in pertinent academic journals as well as at conferences.

The research focusses on the development of sustainable and resilient water systems and infrastructures. The focus is expected to combine engineering innovation, holistic systems thinking and collaborative governance approaches to investigate and ensure water security at local and global scales from an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary sustainability perspective. Fields of research shall cover all of the following topics:

  • Development and evaluation of innovative water systems and technologies and comprehensive management concepts to adapt water system infrastructures to increasing uncertainties and changing framework conditions.
  • System-analytical research and method development to understand, assess and develop the transformation of water systems and infrastructures in diverse contexts of sustainable development with regard to different scales and regional settings.
  • Analysis, design and implementation of novel forms of cooperation and governance of water systems and infrastructure, achieved through transdisciplinary interaction with societal actors in the context of sustainability transformation.

University of Kassel offers various interfaces with environmental engineering, landscape engineering and urban planning, and agricultural sciences as well as with research on the transition to more sustainable societal practices in the fields of social sciences and humanities within the Kassel Institute for Sustainability.

The Kassel Institute for Sustainability is the scientific centre for sustainability at the University of Kassel, where up to 17 new SDG professorships will combine their expertise while being structurally linked to the departments. The professorship will be located at and be part of the core team of the Kassel Institute for Sustainability. In addition, the SDG professorships are expected to actively and significantly organize the cooperation between departments and the Kassel Institute in research and teaching. We expect an excellent publishing record, demonstrated teaching skills and experience in the acquisition of third-party funding. The professorship is expected to deliver 50% of its teaching in the newly emerging sustainability-related degree programs and 50% of its teaching in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, in both German and English. The aim is to implement innovative project-based teaching formats linking engineering and non-engineering sciences.
