Position Summary | Are you a PhD-trained researcher with expertise in isotopic, spectrometric, and chemical analyses of environmental systems, ready to bring your skills to impactful scientific work? Join us as our new Research Scientist: Environmental Chemist/Analyst! The University of Regina is seeking an Environmental Research Scientist to join the Institute of Environmental Change and Society (IECS, http://iecs-uregina.ca), and work with a team of Canada Research Chairs, environmental researchers, and molecular scientists in studying environmental issues related to grassland environments, aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, and their protection. The Environmental Analyst position is primarily a research position; the successful candidate will be expected to conduct an independent research program, and also facilitate the research of others through collaboration, advice with analytical questions, and expert service. The Research Scientist is also expected to leverage, manage, maintain, and upgrade instrumentation within the Environmental Analysis Facility (EAF), including: Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry, Gas Chromatography, High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Cavity Ring Down Spectroscopy, water chemistry, and other units. The EAF is housed in the $15M Institute of Environmental Change and Society, a unique a 6500 sq. ft research centre at the University of Regina that provides world-class infrastructure and research expertise to a collaborative community of faculty, students and staff from regional, national, and international agencies. IECS contains key equipment required to conduct cutting-edge environmental research including comprehensive field equipment, superb analytical capabilities (LC-MS-MS, confocal laser scanning microscopy, atomic force microscopy, 2DGE, MiSeq), and a dedicated numerical analysis laboratory with staff quantitative scientist. What You’ll Do: The candidate is expected to develop an independently funded research program that takes full advantage of the instrumentation available within IECS. Active collaboration with the team of scientists and student researchers within IECS is also expected. Expected to work with other local, regional and national scientists to promote IECS, provide day-to-day management of the Environmental Analysis Facility, and apply novel and routine chemical analyses to pressing environmental issues. Position Requirements What You’ll Bring to this Position: hold a PhD in biological, chemical, geological, earth, or environmental sciences 3-5 years research experience. A combination of education and experience may be considered. Skills That Will Ensure Your Success in the Role: Proven research success Strong communication and collaboration skills Experience in mentoring or training students. Strong technical experience in employing instrumentation listed above and small molecules chemistry is particularly important. Expertise in chemical analysis of diverse environmental samples (liquid, solid, gaseous) and be particularly motivated to develop advanced analytical techniques for environmental samples. Candidates should be thoroughly familiar with operation and maintenance of equipment referred above. Candidates should be creative, work independently and have the ability to plan, analyze and organize multiple projects. The ability to coordinate the work of others, and communicate and collaborate effectively with diverse experts and students is essential. Successful applicants will also receive advanced training on the instruments referred above. |
