Job Summary:

This position is part of the Hydrology Division, Field Services Section within the Geophysics/Surveying Unit and may assist with all other aspects of the Field Services Section. This position will perform the following activities in the field: Gravity surveying to monitor the change in aquifer storage; GNSS surveying to monitor land subsidence; and construct, troubleshoot/repair and replace equipment at CORS sites. This position will be responsible for processing gravity and GNSS data; updating databases, performing data analysis, and QA/QC; writing hydrological reports; and completing daily review(s) of the AZCORS network and reporting any CORS sites that are down.

This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department’s business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures. A minimum of two days on-site at the ADWR office per week is required.

Job Duties:

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Performs Gravity survey in the field to monitor the change in aquifer storage. Work with relative and absolute gravity meters.
  • Performs GNSS Surveys in the field to monitor land subsidence and aquifer storage change studies. Work with survey-grade GNSS equipment. Process GNSS data, complete QA/QC, update database with results, and analyze results.
  • Construct, troubleshoot/repair and replace equipment at CORS sites. Complete daily review(s) of the AZCORS network and report any CORS sites that are down and perform an initial troubleshooting investigation.
  • Use ArcGIS and databases to build maps for planning purposes, and for presentations and reports. Write Hydrological reports.
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge:

  • Must have knowledge of hydrological data collection techniques and principles, data assemblage and data management
    techniques.
  • Must have knowledge of information retrieval from GIS applications and data transfer between different database structures.
  • Expert knowledge of the nature, occurrence and behavior of surface water and groundwater, collection and analysis of data and the interpretation of hydrologic data and systems.
  • Must have a basic understanding of hydrogeologic processes, and well construction techniques.
  • Must be able to apply knowledge of geology, hydrology, and well mechanics for data collection, quality assurance/quality control, and data analysis, and report writing.
  • Basic data collection techniques and principles, data assemblage and data management techniques.
  • Field equipment and techniques; especially transducer and/or automated devices for measuring groundwater levels.
  • The system of land/property description and identification used in the State of Arizona.

Skills:

  • Must have the skills to be able to read and interpret hydrogeologic reports and data.
  • The employee must be proficient in the use of a personal computer to query and create relational databases of monitoring data, well construction, and other hydrogeologic information.
  • Must be able to read and apply concepts and instruction provided within various types of equipment: GNSS, gravity, and continuously operating reference station equipment and groundwater monitoring equipment manuals and other specification documentation.
  • Candidate must be able to comprehend and carry out instructions with regards to all data collection (installation, operation and maintenance, data collection, data compilation, data presentation).
  • Coordinating and conducting field investigations and maintaining an effective working relationship with team members, agency employees and with the public.
  • Preparing timely reports/recommendations involving water resources issues
  • Effective written and verbal communication.
  • Applying research methods/techniques to compile, analyze, and interpret water resource management oriented data.

Ability to:

  • Research, apply concepts and carry out instructions, and to coordinate numerous activities as directed by supervisor.
  • Communicate effectively complex technical information to the public and department management staff.
  • Apply hydrologic principles and methods to direct complex projects involving the analysis of surface water and groundwater quantity and quality problems.
  • Use and be acquainted with common tools and field services instruments (gravimeter, GNSS, electric tapes, steel tapes, sounders, various discharge measurement devices, transducers, topographic maps, and computers).
  • Safely navigate to sites using off-road/4×4 vehicles. and 
  • Work outdoors, travel statewide, and adapt to changing conditions.

Please note this position requires the ability to work in the field at least 70% of the time, which may result in over-night travel, sometimes to remote areas of the state at least 50 – 70% of the time.

Retirement:

Positions in this classification participate in the Arizona State Retirement system (ASRS). Please note, enrollment eligibility will become effective after 27 weeks of employment. The current contribution rate is 12.00%.
