About the Wastewater Enterprise
The Wastewater Enterprise (WWE) operates San Franciscoโs combined sewer system, protecting public health and the environment. Services span eight watersheds, 1,000+ miles of pipe, 24 miles of storage facilities, and three all-weather treatment plants. WWE treats 34.6 billion gallons of wastewater annually and produces biosolids that are reused as sustainable soil amendments across the Bay Area.
About the Role
Project: WW 647 R Biosolids Digester Facilities Project โ Machinist Support
Work Location: 750 Phelps Street, San Francisco, CA 94124
The Maintenance Machinist (7332) performs preventive, routine, and emergency maintenance/repair of wastewater equipment and components. This includes operating precision tools, fabricating parts, and supporting treatment plants and pumping stations. The role involves sustained physical effort, occasional work in confined spaces, and may require after-hours assignments to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate machine tools (manual and CNC: mills, lathes, drills, saws, etc.).
- Fabricate, modify, and rebuild parts for pumps, valves, gearboxes, motors, compressors, pipelines, cranes, and other wastewater equipment.
- Diagnose, install, inspect, and repair machinery and mechanical components.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
- Dismantle, assemble, and test light and heavy machines.
- Maintain records and forms documenting work performed.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience:
- Completion of a recognized 4-year Machinist apprenticeship + 2 years full-time journey-level experience as a Maintenance Machinist (repair/machine tool operations)
OR
- A combination of trade-related training (certificate program or military program) + journey-level Maintenance Machinist experience totaling 6 years
Notes:
- Trade-related training refers to programs such as machine tool technology.
- CNC/NC-only machining experience (without manual maintenance machinist experience) does not qualify.
License/Certification:
- Valid Class C California Driver License.
Substitution:
- Completion of a CA Division of Apprenticeship Standards recognized Maintenance Machinist apprenticeship program may substitute for the six (6) years combined experience.
Salary and Appointment
๐ฐ Compensation: $111,566 โ $135,382 annually (appointment starts at Step 5)
๐ Appointment Type: Permanent Exempt โ up to 36 months (not part of Civil Service exam process)
