Your Opportunity:

Prof. George B. Arhonditsis, Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences at the University of Toronto Scarborough, invites applicants for the position of Senior Research Associate to conduct research in mathematical and statistical modelling within the watershed-river-lake continuum in the Great Lakes basin. The proposed research in environmental modelling aims to construct mathematical models to simulate lower food web dynamics in the Great Lakes, including algal blooms, macrophytes, dreissenids, fluxes of nutrients and early diagenetic processes in the sediments, nearshore currents and influence of upwelling events on nutrient concentrations in pelagic and littoral zones of the Great Lakes. The research will also involve integration of eutrophication with watershed models to investigate the effects of beneficial management practices and climate change projections.

This opportunity of a Senior Research Associate is a continuing appointment, and the anticipated start date is September 1st, 2025.

Job Duties:

  • The candidate will be responsible for the conceptualization, execution, and dissemination of mathematical modelling research, as directed by Prof. George B. Arhonditsis. Beyond these responsibilities, the successful candidate will have the following duties:
  • Modelling analysis including the use of statistical packages by R and Python programming
  • Environmental modelling analysis and data visualization on a map-based tool
  • Writing and editing of manuscripts, grant proposals, and government reports
  • Writing of research results into manuscript format
  • Deliver research workshops, academic conference presentations, and research talks
  • Manage Ecological Modelling Lab website and communications
  • Training of graduate and undergraduate students (software, writing and oral presentation skills, and professional development)

Qualifications (Minimum Qualifications):

Candidates must have a Ph.D. related to ecological/environmental modelling and at least eight (8) years of postdoctoral experience, with demonstrated academic and research excellence in the following academic areas:

  • Quantitative environmental analysis and ecological modelling. Excellence is to be demonstrated through publications in high quality, peer-reviewed journals
  • Ability to work independently, e.g., experience presenting research; experience supervising students
  • Computer skills include mastery of programming languages (Fortran, R, Python, MATLAB) Modelling packages for Bayesian inference (WinBUGS/OpenBUGS/MultiBUGS), and Geographical Information Systems (ESRI ArcGIS)
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and presentation skills appropriate to different audiences
  • Ability and track record working in a team environment, also with a high level of initiative and self-direction without close supervision

Travel:

Extended travelling will be required. The Senior Research Associate will have the opportunity to present their research at academic conferences.
