Position Overview
Stationary Engineers operate and maintain complex machinery and equipment at wastewater treatment plants or pumping stations. Openings are available in both Operations and Maintenance divisions. Work involves inspections, troubleshooting, repairs, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Operate, inspect, maintain, and repair wastewater treatment and pumping equipment (e.g., pumps, conveyors, chlorinators, tanks, sludge collectors, meters).
Conduct regular inspections using visual, audio, olfactory, and tactile checks; record gauge/meter readings and maintenance logs.
Collect and test wastewater and chemical samples to ensure process efficiency and compliance with NPDES permits.
Monitor and adjust solids treatment, chemical, disinfection, and dechlorination systems.
Inspect pipelines, tanks, and gates for leaks, blockages, and wear.
Perform cleaning, lubrication, and preventive maintenance to ensure safe, reliable operations.
Train and guide apprentices or trainees.
Minimum Qualifications
One of the following:
Experience: 4 years as a journey-level Stationary Engineer, Plant Operator, or Plant Mechanic in a wastewater facility, government, hospital, or industrial/commercial setting.
Apprenticeship: Completion of a recognized 4-year Stationary Engineer Apprenticeship.
Education: Graduation from a 4-year Maritime Academy (Engineering/Technology) OR possession of a 3rd Assistant Marine Engineer’s License (unrestricted horsepower).
Other: FAA Airframe or Power Plant Certificate + 4 years related mechanic/maintenance experience.
All candidates must have:
Valid driver’s license.
Required operator certifications (OIT or Grade I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate) and progression to Grade II within timelines set by the State of California Water Resources Control Board.
Maintenance staff without operator certifications must obtain a CWEA Grade I Mechanical Technology Certificate within 2 years.
Desirable Qualifications
California Grade III or higher Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a related field
Additional Requirements
Annual State-mandated respirator medical clearance and fit testing (must be clean-shaven).
Ability to meet ongoing educational requirements set by the State Water Resources Control Board.
Pre-employment and random drug/alcohol testing for safety-sensitive positions.
