Lead coastal policy that shapes South Australia’s environmental future.

We are seeking a strategic and experienced professional to lead policy and governance for the management of South Australia’s coastal environments. As the Team Leader, Policy and Governance, you will guide a team in delivering innovative, evidence-based strategies and frameworks that protect and enhance our coastlines.

About the Role:

This leadership role is responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of coastal policy and governance initiatives aligned with Departments and Coast Protection Board objectives. You will provide high-level advice, lead cross-government collaboration, and act as the Secretariat for the Coast Protection Board, ensuring best practice in coastal protection and marine environmental management.

Key Deliverables:

  • Lead and empower a team of professional staff to achieve high performance and policy impact.
  • Drive the development of coastal strategies and governance frameworks to support sustainable coastal management.
  • Inform coastal policy through robust stakeholder engagement, data analysis, and research.
  • Provide strategic advice and executive support to the Coast Protection Board, including grants and program oversight.
  • Represent South Australia at national forums to influence and align coastal policy.
  • Build and maintain strong networks across all levels of government, industry, and community stakeholders.

Essential Criteria:

  • Extensive experience applying current environmental policy issues.
  • Experience in leading, managing, coaching and guiding a team of professional staff to achieve outcomes.
  • Extensive experience leading the initiation, development, implementation and evaluation of environmental policy projects to meet organisational objectives.
  • Extensive experience in managing community consultation, with demonstrated success influencing a broad range of stakeholders from diverse backgrounds with differing viewpoints to reach a common position.
  • Experience in developing and utilising tailored change management strategies and plans to achieve change.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, and take into consideration, government, community, commercial and political implications that may influence or impact on policy, strategy and program direction.
  • Ability to assimilate and interpret large amounts of complex information from a number of sources, draw out themes and identify gaps, challenge and test underlying concepts and ideas and evaluate information to reach useful conclusions.
  • Demonstrated ability to write with influence and convey very complex and/or sensitive information accurately whilst also being attentive to the political/social environment.
  • Experience in working within a Board context and/or government context is considered highly desirable.

  • May be required to participate in responses to state emergencies or associated duties.
  • You must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or provide evidence that you hold a valid working visa that allows you to work in Australia without restrictions.
  • Prior to being employed, the successful applicant will be required to obtain a National Police Check.
  • May be required to undertake intra or interstate travel, occasional overnight absences, and work outside of the normal hours of work.

Remuneration: 
ASO8, $121,107 min – $125,679 max p.a.
