About WASH Institute

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Institute (WASH Institute), established in 2008,is a non-profit organization, dedicated to providing practical solutions to tackle a wide range of water, sanitation, hygiene and environmental issues in India and the neighbouring countries. WASH Institute aims to build the capacities of the sector through programs that provide a) training and academic courses, b) technical advisory and consultancy services, and c) grass roots community WASH programs.

WASH Institute has been conducting extensive training programs for government functionaries, private sector professionals, NGOs, and other practitioners with the objective of effective WASH implementation across the country. In addition, our academic campus offers Diploma and Masters level courses in sanitation, under affiliation to a leading university.

As part of our WASH Advisory program, we provide PMU services to central, state, and local governments in both urban and rural areas to support implementation of SBM, JJM, and AMRUT schemes. Our community WASH programs are currently ongoing in 15 locations across 8 states and 1 Union Territory in India.

We are a multi-disciplinary team that tackle complex multi-faceted problems of behaviour change, quality of service, and sustainability of WASH interventions. We are looking for experienced professionals to work with us towards our visions of “a world where all the communities have access to safe, protected and sustainable drinking water and sanitation services, with improved hygiene practices”.

Mobile Treatment Unit (MTU)
Through its research & development wing, WASH Institute has built a mobile treatment unit that treats faecal sludge from septic tank while desludging the containment system. The unit has been extensively field tested over 5 years now and its performance has been tested by International and Indian institutions. Mobile treatment unit is now ready to be commercially launched and scaling its outreach across India. In this regard, with the support from USAID Development Innovation Ventures, WASH Institute plans to test different business models for implementation of MTU and develop its scale up plan.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:
• To prepare and execute time to time research and development in Mobile Septage Treatment Unit (MTU) project as a part of the technical team.
• Literature review, study and research on UF filter membrane and coordinate with suppliers for procurement of suitable membrane.
• Research and field experiment on Sludge separation options and application of the modifications in MTU.
• Coordinate with technical vendors for upgradation of digitization of MTU operation time to time.
• Coordinate with MTU Licensees for support in upgradation and marketing. Coordinate with Marketing experts of Licensees for supply and delivery of MTUs on time.
• Track on sale of MTU with the support of Licensees and data collection.
• Develop and maintain MIS and data sheet to track the performance and operation of MTU through the dashboard, with number of direct beneficiaries, quantity of sludge and liquid treatment, service charges/fees collected etc for at least 20 MTUs.
• Identify responsible person/persons with licenses and train them to manage the complete tracking system of MTU to get all above mentioned information.
• Travel to selected ULBs and licenses time to time to track the MTU performance and MIS data collection and verification.
• Coordinate and impart training to licensees and MTU operators on MTU assembly/fabrication and its operation & maintenance including troubling-shooting solutions.
• Coordinate with Licensees for facilitation of bank financing for MTU procurement by individuals and private players.
• Communicate project status and results with team on regular meetings and updates.
• Presentation and promotion of MTU to Government departments and private partners
• Up skilling the support staff and MTU team at the institute on subject matters and project management.
• Contribute and oversee the research activities undertaken at the institute.
• Support the project team in any other functions as and when required.
• To provide support in troubleshooting of MTU to MTU Licensees, operation team from ULBs/Private players who may procure the MTU.

Preferred Qualification and Experience
• Post Graduate degree or bachelor’s in engineering; preferably in mechanical, civil, environmental or chemical engineering
• Work experience of 2 to 5 years in WASH sector and understanding engineering design is critical
• Good writing skills
• Understanding of water and sanitation themes and issues is desirable and must have strong interest to work in the sector.
• Fluency in English is essential with regional languages.
