Position description:

We are looking to hire a Research Assistant who is committed to supporting research work carried out in pursuit of a more sustainable future for human communities and natural ecosystems. Working under the leadership of the SEI Latin America water program manager, you will contribute to manage and implement research, capacity development and policy design projects in the Latin America centre related to water management, river basin planning and sustainable sanitation.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Under the supervision of the water program lead, implement projects of the Latin America centre water program, developing, using and transferring planning tools and participatory processes that promote holistic, transparent and robust decision-making for planning and management of river basins and water systems.
  • Under the support of research associates and fellows, develop data analysis that support water management models implementation.
  • Use Geographic Information Systems for the analysis of water resource management systems.
  • Develop activities to engage stakeholders, build capacity, and inform decision-making among public and private institutions in the water and environmental sectors.
  • Perform work in the office, in the field, and with public and private institutions across various areas to collect necessary information for project implementation.
  • Prepare materials to disseminate results and facilitate capacity building, including reports, scientific publications, guides, manuals, and presentations, among others.
  • Support the development of new proposals relevant to the water program.

Who you are:

You have a BS in engineering, environmental or earth science. You are studying a MSc in Water Resources or have a background and interest to learn about water management. To succeed in this role, you are organized, collaborative, problem-solving, proactive, and have excellent communication skills in both Spanish and English. You should have the ability to work independently to meet objectives, dates and deadlines, and be able to work in the field under variable climatic conditions, in remote locations, and in physically demanding circumstances. You will also be required to travel to different places (both within and outside the country).

In addition to being able to work effectively in the water program, you should possess the following specific characteristics:

  • Attitude to learn and develop water management models, particularly WEAP.
  • Knowledge of water quality monitoring and modeling.
  • Knowledge in Geographical Information Systems, remote sensing, and spatial data management.
  • Solid knowledge and experience in the use of scientific computing tools for spatial analysis (e.g., R, MATLAB, Python)
