This position supports the work of the Arizona Water for All (AW4A), part of The Arizona Water Innovation Initiative (AWII), a statewide project led by the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory that aims to rapidly accelerate and deploy new approaches and technology for water conservation, augmentation, desalination, efficiency, infrastructure and reuse. The initiative has five strategic programs: the Global Center for Water Technology, the Arizona Water Observatory and Decision Support System, Impact Water Arizona, Arizona Water for All, and the Kyl Center for Water Policy. AW4A is an interdisciplinary, social science led program working to design and advance solutions to improve water security and engagement in water decision-making using community-based participatory approaches, contributing to ensure a future in which all Arizona households will have fair access to safe and sufficient water.
Under general supervision, the position will provide leadership and expertise in developing and facilitating outreach-related strategies to support the AW4A Network, a community of practice created by a partnership between Arizona State University (ASU), Northern Arizona University (NAU), and the University of Arizona (UofA). The successful candidate will be part of a multi-institutional team working on applied research and outreach with water-insecure communities, researchers, government representatives and other collaborating partners. Engagement and outreach strategies may include hard-copy materials, presentations, workshops, webinars, digital content and social media, and community events both at an ASU campus or community sites.
The ideal Community Outreach Coordinator is an energetic, flexible, creative yet project-oriented professional who establishes and maintains positive working relationships with team members and all stakeholders; Is knowledgeable of community engagement strategies and basic project management; Is able to co-develops and implement integrated outreach plans and strategies; Have skill in creating content and designing communication materials to support outreach efforts.
This is a temporary position with an anticipated duration of 12-months, with possible extension pending funding. This position is full-time (1.0 FTE), benefits eligible.
Essential Duties:
- With input from the AW4A academic team, develop and implement new ideas for increasing stakeholder engagement, project implementation and impact of AW4A efforts
- Lead community engagement efforts by coordinating and facilitating necessary one-on-one and group meetings (in person and virtually).
- Develop rapport and credibility with contacts at water-related government agencies, non-profit organizations, and community-based organizations relevant to research activities
- Review and evaluate effectiveness of outreach activities, identifying areas for strengthening to improve outcomes
- Conceive, write, edit and produce original, engaging content for email campaigns, e-news, outreach activities, social media, advertising and marketing materials to support the AW4A Network
- Monitor, manage and coordinate photography, videography, graphic design, production, web design, media relations, publicity, and brand development.
- Prepare budget proposals and recommendations on outreach materials where appropriate.
- Simultaneously manages multiple events at various stages of planning and execution; Provides on-site presence and support as needed during events (which may include weekends or scheduled remote days) to ensure coordination of all aspects of the event
- Attend seminars, workshops, and conferences related to the work of AW4A.
- Provide assistance and information to faculty, staff, and outside organizations regarding function/program.
- May supervise the activities of student employees, interns and volunteers, as related to outreach efforts.
Desired Qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
- Demonstrated ability to be organized, manage competing priorities and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously
- Experience working effectively and respectfully in a team environment with demonstrated ability to create and sustain positive working relationships internal and external to the organization
- Familiarity with principles, concepts, and practices of project management and organization practices
- Experience working with socio-environmental causes and/or water-insecure households and communities
- Skill in effective communication, both written and verbal and evidence of effective presentation skills
- Demonstrated expertise and knowledge of best practices in event planning and management
- Knowledge of best practices of communication and outreach methods and techniques, communication planning, and designing materials to multiple audience
- Demonstrated knowledge of Zoom (or equivalent) for meetings, webinars, recordings
- Experience in using computer-based graphic programs is a plus
- Experience working with WordPress, Drupal, PJP,ASP, or similar programs is a plus
- Experience in using Salesforce, MailChimp, or other email platforms is a plus
Working Environment:
50% of activities are performed in an environmentally climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of being in a stationary position and operating a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine and computer printer; 50% of activities will be performed in local community and local research sites involving travel to local destinations. Frequently required to commute for varying lengths of time and travel distances to perform work; Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions.

The Arizona Water for All program works with Arizona’s most water-insecure households and communities to improve water security and engagement in water decision-making using community-based participatory approaches. To achieve water security, Arizona Water for All is working to promote empowerment and participation in community water decision-making, deploy proven water security solutions such as fit-to-purpose technologies and advance measurement and monitoring of household water insecurity.
Arizona Water for All unites community engagement with household water monitoring and building necessary water infrastructure in communities across the state. This program is providing opportunities for ASU social scientists to leverage location by doing use-inspired research and building community partnerships to transform society.
