Position Summary

The Hydrologist provides The Everglades Foundation with concise and sound recommendations based on a variety of scientific assessments and hydrologic modeling outputs, while investigating Everglades restoration scenarios, operational strategies, and projects. The Hydrologist will be responsible for providing thorough technical results to resolve complex problems and issues, communicating effectively, and evaluating high priority projects to support the Foundation goals and objectives

Primary Responsibilities

The Hydrologist has responsibility in two core areas: Modeling & Hydrology and Project Management. The primary responsibilities of the position include:

• Maintain in-depth understanding of surface water, groundwater, and watershed-based models to

evaluate scenarios and solve specific and difficult surface water problems.

• Run ecological and hydraulic models as applied to Florida Everglades and its related ecosystems.

Examples include Regional Simulation Model (RSM), BISECT, the Joint Ecosystem Modelling (JEM) tools,

HEC, MIKE SHE/MIKE 11, and Modflow.

• Analyze the eco-hydrology of the Everglades ecosystem, investigating scenarios and options while

resolving critical hydrologic problems, and identifying hydraulic restoration regimes to determine

appropriate structural and non-structural actions to achieve wetland restoration.

• Connect model outputs with ecosystem indicators and ecosystem services.

• Provide technical leadership for a range of water management projects.

• Complete technical evaluations of proposed government or private actions to assess the ecosystem

response.

• Develop scientific and technical documents, including scientific articles for peers; visual presentations for

general audiences; clear, concise recommendations for Everglades Foundation staff and the organization

board members; expert testimony suitable for submission to a court; technical evaluations and comment

letters suitable for inclusion into the record of an environmental restoration project.

• Represent the Foundation at restoration planning and science meetings.

Similar to other members of the Science Team, the Hydrologist will also:

• Collaborate and communicate internally as a member of The Everglades Foundation’s Science Team,

• Interface with the Foundation’s Education, Policy, Communications, and Development teams, as needed,

to maximize information sharing and optimize our impact,

• Provide briefings and tours, as needed, to board members, stakeholders, partner groups, and supporters

of The Everglades Foundation, and

• Maintain academic research collaborations, mentor students, attend professional conferences, and

participate in professional development opportunities, as needed, to continue to grow as a credible,

respected scientist in your field.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Excellent communicator to both technical and non-technical audiences.

academic and agency scientists and practitioners.

• Ability to establish and cultivate strong relationships with peers externally and across different levels

of the organization.

• Passion and enthusiasm for the Everglades and/or the environment a plus.

Education and Qualifications:

• PhD in Hydrology, Ecology, Environmental Science or equivalent.

• 5+ years of professional experience working in hydrology, civil engineering (with a background in

hydrologic sciences), or a related field of water sciences required.

• Advanced technical expertise and sound professional judgement to South Florida water management.

Salary:

• $110,0000 to $125,000 commensurate with experience

Accountability

The Hydrologist reports directly to the Senior Restoration Scientist and coordinates closely with members of the Science department, and other Foundation staff. All work in the aforementioned areas will be done in coordination or consultation with the Senior Restoration Scientist.

Location and Schedule

This is a full-time on-site position, based in the Foundation’s main office located in Palmetto Bay, Florida. The employee in this role is expected to work on-site at the Foundation’s main office. Occasional weekend and evening work, as well as travel to attend meetings, tours, and events is required. Total time spent traveling is expected to be less than 20%. Occasional remote work from home may be permitted.
