Scope of JobTrainee position to pursue research as a vital component of their educational mission and professional career development. Works under minimal supervision with some latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment in research and/or teaching. Performs teaching and/or research work as required within the classroom and/or project assigned.Performs teaching and/or research work as required within the classroom and/or project assigned.
Description of DutiesThe following is a listing of typical duties that may be applicable to the position:

Developing, testing, and analyzing research projects based on application expertise and interest; Aiding in the development of a survey instrument, testing the instrument and disseminating the instrument; Writing narrative summaries of the research results, and related tasks under the supervision of the faculty member assigned; Conducting background research; Developing and implementing an evaluation plan and preparing progress reports as needed; Studying, testing, and maintaining accurate data identified as relevant and/or best practice systems from research results obtained through national studies; Designing and implementing training activities as required; Teaching one to two courses per semester in conjunction with faculty member, if assigned; Publishing in peer-reviewed publications or reports related to the focus of the research activities assigned; and performing other job-related duties as assigned. Detecting geomorphic change in the lower Rio Grande Valley using airborne LiDAR datasets collected in 2011 and 2022.

Required EducationDoctoral degree in Earth or Planetary Sciences, or a related discipline, from an accredited university.

Preferred ExperienceExperience in working with LiDAR change detection and derived digital elevation model (DEM).Experience in using landscape evolution, flow routing, sediment transport, or hydrological models.Experience with drone survey and data processing.Field experience in geomorphological and hydrological surveys.Experience in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
EquipmentUse of personal computer and proficiency in software, research statistical and mathematical applications.
Working ConditionsNeeds to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office/research environment; some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
