Bring innovative thinking to water planning, design & delivery
Mallee Catchment Management Authority (CMA) is a Victorian Government statutory authority whose role it is to facilitate an integrated approach to the sustainable management of natural, cultural, and productive landscapes in the north-west of Victoria.
The Mallee CMA region covers 3.9 million hectares – about one fifth of Victoria. It is the largest catchment area in the state and runs along the Murray River from Nyah to the South Australian border, and south through vast dryland cropping areas and public reserves.
About the opportunity
Integrated Water Management (IWM) is a collaborative approach to water planning and management that brings together the management of water resources, land, and community needs to deliver social, environmental, cultural and economic benefits. IWM recognises the interconnectedness of the water cycle — including drinking water, wastewater, stormwater and waterways — and the need to manage water in a more integrated and place-based way.
The IWM Officer is responsible for leading the Mallee CMA’s contribution to IWM planning, collaboration, and project delivery. This dedicated role will strengthen the organisation’s strategic engagement in IWM forums, support internal capacity building, and drive the integration of IWM practices across the northern Mallee IWM region.
The IWM Officer will operate as part of a statewide cohort of CMA IWM practitioners and participate in a peer network coordinated by the Statewide IWM Coordinator, with guidance and support from the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA). The position also supports joint initiatives with other CMAs and partners to improve waterway health, community resilience and cross-sector coordination.
The role is a full-time, fixed term four-year position, with a base salary starting at $113,000, plus superannuation, with potential for higher compensation based on experience and qualifications.
About you
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in environmental planning, water or natural resource management, engineering, land use planning or a related field (essential).
- Knowledge of IWM and the water sector in Victoria.
- Relevant project design and management experience, working with a high degree of autonomy and initiative.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, collaborative project management, or inter-agency collaboration, with the ability to influence practices to embed IWM principles.
- Built and maintained partnerships with local government, water corporations, Traditional Owners, and other key stakeholders to co-design and implement IWM opportunities.
- Contributed to evaluation and learning by sharing practice insights, participating in annual reflections, and fulfilling reporting requirements.
- Proven organisational and time management abilities, capable of working both independently and collaboratively within a team to meet stringent deadlines, manage competing priorities to deliver high-quality outcomes in complex and dynamic settings.
- Demonstrated ability to solve problems of a complex nature.
- Demonstrated ability to model the Mallee CMA’s and the Victorian Public Sector values and behaviours.
