The Position

The Research and Innovation Department is currently seeking an intern for it’s Integrated Water Resource Technology Research division.

This position assists with projects to promote the development and engagement of new technologies and innovative operations at Clean Water Services (CWS). 

Additional Internship Information:

  • Temporary position for a maximum of six months 
  • Flexible schedule: part-time up to full-time (24-40 hours per week) 
  • Depending on hours worked and duration, this position may qualify for an offer of Healthcare insurance benefits.

Essential Functions

(The essential functions listed below are not intended to reflect all duties that may be assigned to this classification.  The District may augment duties and/or essential functions at its discretion.  Additionally, some incumbents may not perform all Essential Functions.)

  1. Assists with assigned research projects, directed by mentor and senior personnel. Example projects include; research on advanced gas and water quality sensing, greenhouse gas emissions from wastewater recovery facilities, the collection system, and other CWS-operated sources, and basic sampling efforts to support research studies. 
  2. Assists with installation, operation, basic maintenance, and troubleshooting of continuous sensing devices for water and air.
  3. Assists with study design, data acquisition, data analysis, reporting and presenting of findings for forensic and research studies focused on identifying unknown gases and quantifying emissions.
  4. Drives a Clean Water Services vehicle for work related purposes.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Laboratory documentation methods, record keeping, testing and sampling
  • Basic research methods and data collection
  • Laboratory sampling methods and techniques
  • Pertinent safety practices and procedures

SKILL IN:

  • Operating scientific equipment
  • Microsoft Office programs
  • The use of computers and computer software for record keeping, spreadsheet applications and database use
  • Data analysis

ABILITY TO:

  • Understand and follow oral and written directions and procedures
  • Establish effective working relationships with other employees and associates
  • Operate effectively in a team environment
  • Maintain accurate records
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Learn appropriate computer applications related to the research being conducted
  • Learn new skills, equipment, and program efficiently

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
A current or recently graduated student with a Bachelor’s Degree, or student working towards a Master’s Degree inenvironmental engineering, environmental science, water resources, hydrology, ecological engineering, or other relatedscience.

6 months experience with Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy equipment, forensic gas detection, and/or greenhouse gas emission measurements is preferred.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:
Upon selection, candidate must possess and maintain a valid State issued driver’s license.
