Te āheinga / The opportunity  

We are seeking a skilled and driven Data Specialist to play a pivotal role in our Hydrology team. This position supports the Hydrology Manager in coordinating the team’s key hydrometric data management operations. You will be responsible for processing and archiving crucial environmental data into our Hilltop time series database, ensuring our information flows are accurate, timely, and robust. 

In this position, you will ensure compliance with our Quality Systems and the National Environmental Monitoring Standards by designing and conducting periodic audits to maintain the highest standards of integrity. Your role also includes managing responses to internal and external data requests, ensuring the information shared is clear, meaningful, and reliable. 

We are looking for someone with proven experience in hydrology, a deep understanding of hydrometric data workflows and quality assurance practices, and strong analytical and reporting skills. The ability to coordinate complex workstreams and contribute to a collaborative, science-driven environment will be key to your success in this role. He kōrero mōu / About you 

We are looking for someone who can bring the following skills, knowledge, personal qualities and experience to our diverse team:  

  • Tertiary qualification in a related discipline (e.g., science, hydrology, environmental monitoring etc.).   
  • 5+ years’ experience in hydrological data collection, flow gauging and hydrological data processing and archiving to the National Environmental Standards.  
  • Expert working knowledge of continuous hydrometric data, flow ratings, and time series software such as Hilltop.   
  • Strong proficiency in the analysis of hydrological data for the description of trends and extremes.   
  • Proficiency in communicating hydrological data, including report writing, and presenting to audiences.   
  • Proficiency with Microsoft applications particularly Word, Excel & Outlook.   
  • Experience in training and mentoring staff.   
  • Experience in local government is preferable.   
  • Full drivers’ licence.
