Offer Description
Teaching activities:
Avignon University offers a comprehensive and structured curriculum in water sciences. This includes
a progressive specialization starting at the undergraduate level (BSc in Earth and Life Sciences), with
Avignon Université ⎢ page 7 sur 9
a dedicated 3rd-year Earth and Water Sciences program, the Hydrology, Soils and Environment
Master’s program (M1 & M2), and the Engineering Master’s Curriculum in Water Resources and
Environment (CMI R2E). Starting in 2024, a vocational Bachelor’s program in Water Professions
(apprenticeship format) is complementing this offer, followed in 2025 by a Professional Degree (DU)
in Judicial Expertise in Water and Environment.
In addition to contributing to these programs and their pedagogical committees, the recruited professor
will be encouraged to develop high-value educational initiatives such as a field school leveraging the
multidisciplinary nature of the LSBB site and its socio-environmental significance, or a summer school
aligned with the GeEAUde endowed chair.
In collaboration with the academic director of the CMI R2E, the professor will also oversee research
integration activities across the curriculum (from 1st year to M2). Together with the Master’s program
coordinators, they will manage the collection, selection, and assignment of research projects for
students. Over time, depending on their expertise and involvement, they may take on academic
leadership of one or more programs (L3, vocational L3, M1, M2, CMI, DU).
Annual teaching load during pre-tenure period: 64 hours (no additional teaching permitted).
Research activities:
Modeling water and material flows in subsurface hydrosystems is essential for addressing water
resource sustainability under climate and anthropogenic pressures. Modeling of karst systems or deep
multilayer aquifers remains a major scientific challenge due to their complex multi-scale heterogeneity.
The CPJ GIRE-CG will aim to develop innovative modeling approaches in synergy with ongoing work
within the GeEAUde partnership chair and the strategic priorities of UMR EMMAH.
These approaches will better integrate:
(i) surface fluxes and land use via remote sensing and agroecosystem modeling,
(ii) geological constraints in partnership with ongoing activities with IFP Energies Nouvelles,
(iii) data from environmental tracers and geophysics.
This research will leverage data from the Fontaine de Vaucluse observatory, including the Low Noise
Underground Laboratory (LSBB) in Rustrel — a unique facility for investigating deep karst systems.
These sites are part of the National Observation Services (SNO) H+ and Karst and the OZCAR
Research Infrastructure (Critical Zone Observatories: Applications and Research), ensuring a strong
link to national monitoring networks.
The project will also incorporate knowledge from the deep Miocene multilayer aquifer of the Comtat
Venaissin, a key hydrosystem for understanding and sustainably managing groundwater in the region.
