Water for People India is operational in the state of West Bengal, Bihar, Maharashtra, Assam, Jharkhand and Odisha, and reached 2.6 million people through community drinking water, WASH in public institutions, and market-led approaches to sanitation. Over the past decade, Water For People India has emerged as a niche organization with focused water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programs that cater to the most vulnerable and marginalized communities, inclusive of public institutions such as Anganwadi centers, schools, and health centres. Water For People India is a direct implementation agency supported by civil societies, local NGO partners, and entrepreneurs.

Job Summary

Position Title: Hiring of Agency/Consultancy.

Organization: Water For People India

Location: New Delhi, India

Nature of contract: Research Studies on the stated topics

Water For People India is working towards strengthening SDG 6 of ensuring clean water and sanitation for everyone. In lieu of the same, the organization is working with governments through TSUs, CSR partners, and grassroots agents to improve water and sanitation infrastructure, enhance community capacity, and promote sustainable solutions. Through these strategic partnerships, Water For People India aims to drive lasting change, ensuring that communities have reliable access to safe water and improved sanitation.

Taking forward this agenda, Water For People India is looking for a reputable agency/consultancy to conduct extensive research studies. This task entails meticulously performing data analysis incorporating both primary and secondary data from project locations. The purpose of this engagement is to facilitate incisive insights, effective documentation, and competent dissemination of research findings. The scope of research includes both existing and new geographical areas. The focus of the research will be around Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Water Resources Development and Management integrating with Climate Change impactsto generate actionable insights for program improvement and policy advocacy.

Task: Research Studies – using the data from primary and secondary sources in the implementation sites of Water For People undertake research on novel topics as defined by Water For People.  The agency will be responsible for data collection, analysis, and synthesis, ensuring a robust and evidence-based approach. The final deliverables will be comprehensive research reports and articles that include an executive summary, methodology, key findings, and actionable recommendations. The agency may also be required to develop knowledge products such as policy briefs, infographics, and presentations to effectively disseminate findings among stakeholders, policymakers, and practitioners.

Research topics will be –

  • Impact assessment of Nal Jal Scheme on groundwater quantity and quality due to water extraction in Nalanda
  • Impact of MHM facilities through construction of toilets and changing rooms on reducing school dropout rates among girls and identifying the gaps in Sheohar and Bhojpur

Audience:

Internal program team: The research findings will help to enhance learning, inform strategic planning, and explore innovative approaches for future interventions. The new ideas will also support in developing concept notes and to build the capacity of team by developing the knowledge products.

External audience: The research findings can be used for new project development, donor interaction or can be repurposed for the social media content (articles, blogs, success stories, case studies, etc).

Scope of Work

The selected agency will be responsible for conducting novel research studies in existing geographies of Bihar as stated above. The research will focus on key aspects of Water Resource Management (WRM), Climate Resilience, and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) to generate actionable insights for program improvement and policy advocacy. Based on the findings, the agency will also be required to create high quality reports, concept notes and knowledge products that can be used for internal learning, external communication, and collaboration.

The agency will be responsible for the following activities:

  1. Develop a research framework aligned with Water For People India’s thematic priorities.
  2. Create a comprehensive framework for research studies, including data collection methodologies, tools, and sample selection.
  3. Conduct data collection field visits to target areas using both quantitative and qualitative research methods.
  4. Engage with relevant stakeholders to refine research objectives.
  5. Gather data from primary sources (field surveys, interviews, focus group discussions) and secondary sources (existing reports, policy documents, academic studies)
  6. Analyse data gathered to identify key challenges, trends, and best practices in both existing program areas and new geographies in Bihar.
  7. Create research reports that are clear and concise, highlighting key findings, recommendations, and actionable insights.
  8. To effectively communicate the project’s impact to various stakeholders, create visually appealing knowledge products such as case studies, infographics, notes, and presentations.
  9. Ensure that all collected and shared information respects the privacy and dignity of the communities involved.

Deliverables and Timeline

List of deliverables for the proposed engagement may include:

Deliverable: The deliverables should be with the best content and best design for dissemination (soft copy).

  • Research Study (2 counts) which will also include at least one case study each
  • Assessment tools
  • Draft inception report
  • Midline report
  • Final report in consultation with Water for People India

Timeline: June – August 2025.

Required Skills and Experience

  • The agency must have at least 8+ years of experience in undertaking research studies on WASH, Water Resource Management, Health, Agriculture and Livelihood. And have good understanding of WASH, WRM, Climate change, JJM, SBM etc.
  • Must have experience in conducting research in around WASH, WRM, Agriculture and Livelihood integrating climate change impacts.
  • Must have demonstrated experience/expertise in data analysis, statistical analysis, triangulation, and qualitative analysis in the development sector.
  • Good experience of developing the concept notes using the findings from research for publication, blog documentation, and success stories.
  • Good communication skills and an eye for detailing.
  • Excellent report/ documentation skill in English.
  • Ability to collaborate and achieve actionable results while meeting deadlines.
