PhD Candidate – Water as key component for the energy transition

Forschungszentrum Jülich

Jülich, Germany 🇩🇪

Water is the basis of our lives, but it is also essential for the success of the energy transition. Water is needed, among other things, for the production of green hydrogen, for cooling power plants, and for hydropower plants. This interaction between the energy and water systems, especially under the influence of various climate change scenarios, is often overlooked. That is why we in the Resource Strategies Department of ICE-2 also consider water as a resource for the energy transition, using our global energy system models.

Your Job:

Against this background, this PhD thesis aims to investigate how water availability affects the energy transition. The goal is to achieve a sustainable energy and water supply and to identify the necessary solutions. The findings should also remain valid under different climate change scenarios. With its global state-of-the-art energy system model, ICE-2 at Forschungszentrum Jülich provides the ideal basis for investigating the global interactions between the energy and water systems.
The work is divided into the following work packages:

  • Familiarization with global energy and water system modeling
  • Analysis of global sustainable water availability under different climate change scenarios
  • Research on water-efficient practices and technologies, taking water quality into account
  • Evaluation and modeling of the influence of water on the energy transition

This doctoral thesis offers you the opportunity to actively participate in the development of solutions for sustainable energy and water supply. You will work in a highly innovative and interdisciplinary research environment and make a direct contribution to the energy transition.

Your Profile:

  • Very good grades in your master`s degree in the fields of geosciences, resource management, energy technology, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, physics, or comparable
  • Basic knowledge in hydrology, resource management, energy system analysis or comparable
  • Initial experience in optimization or statistics is an advantage
  • Initial experience of an object-oriented programming language (e.g. Python, Matlab) and MS Office
  • Analytical and structural thinking
  • Interest in analyzing water-energy interactions
  • Enjoyment of modeling
  • Fluent in written and spoken English, knowledge of German an advantage

Our Offer:

We work on the very latest issues that impact our society and are offering you the chance to actively help in shaping the change! We offer ideal conditions for you to complete your doctoral degree:
