Position Summary

CAFOD is seeking a committed WASH consultant with a speciality in hygiene promotion and environmental health. The post holder will work closely with the WASH team, comprising CAFOD and a local implementing partner, to deliver a UNICEF-funded WASH project in White Nile, Sudan. The project targets IDPs, refugees, and host communities in various localities affected by ongoing conflict. The role focuses on hygiene-related activities and may be called upon to support other associated WASH tasks when required. This position includes field responsibilities, training partner staff and hygiene promoters, participating in coordination forums, monitoring budget lines related to hygiene promotion and ensuring quality narrative reports are submitted by the local partner.

Project Overview

This WASH project aims to improve access to safe water, adequate sanitation, and hygiene promotion in conflict-affected areas of the White Nile. The response will be guided by community engagement, gender-responsive planning, and sustainability. The post holder plays a critical role in ensuring community ownership, protection, inclusion, and behavioural change for better health outcomes.

Duty Station

White Nile, Sudan – specifically in Umsangour, Khor Al Warel, Al Jamyia (Al Salam Locality), Ali Mohammed Noor (Rabak Locality) and Khor Al Waral (Al Jabalain Locality).

Duration

6 months, with the possibility of an extension based on funding and performance.

Reporting to

Programme Manager WASH, CAFOD Sudan.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate hygiene promotion activities across the targeted localities.
  • Support and over the training of Community Hygiene Promoters by the local partner.
  • Develop and implement a capacity-strengthening plan for the local partner in health/hygiene promotion programming.
  • Closely monitor and coordinate with the local partner in organising hygiene awareness campaigns, community outreach, and household visits.
  • In coordination with the CAFOD and Local Partner, wash staff participate and represent CAFOD in WASH Cluster Coordination meetings and other relevant forums.
  • Coordinate and support the local partner in the distribution of hygiene-related items such as soap, jerrycans, hygiene kits, and MHM supplies.
  • Coordinate and support the local partner with water quality monitoring and community surveillance systems.
  • Oversee the development, translation, and distribution of BCC and IEC materials.
  • Collaborate with the WASH team on integrating software and hardware WASH components.
  • Support with project monitoring, evaluation, and reporting, including data collection and documentation.
  • Monitor budget lines related to hygiene promotion, ensuring implementation is cost-effective.Strategic Guidance Documents

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in hygiene promotion and WASH emergency response.
  • Experience working with displaced and conflict-affected populations.
  • Proven skills in community mobilisation, training, and capacity building.
  • Familiarity with SPHERE Standards and UNICEF WASH strategies.
  • Strong coordination, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Fluency in Arabic and English.
