We’re seeking an intern to improve user engagement and experience on our WASH Systems Academy platform. Deadline: 13 June 2025

The WASH Systems Academy is one of IRC’s flagship products. It is a collaborative online platform developed and hosted by IRC to provide WASH sector professionals with the knowledge and tools to strengthen WASH systems. The Academy was launched in September 2019 and now has over 11.000 users from 126 countries with 18 courses offered for free and more courses in development. 95% of our users recommend us and say that they find opportunities to improve their work after following one of our courses. Intern: Global Programme, WASH Systems Academy / User engagement and experience

To inform further development of our learning platform, we seek to improve the user engagement and experience of our platform.

The intern will support IRC in identifying ways to improve the user experience of the WASH Systems Academy by analysing user data, interviewing selected users and conducting market research. The intern will also explore options for user payment. Where possible, the intern will implement changes to the platform.

The internship is an opportunity to gain first-hand experience with an international NGO and explore the use of e-learning to scale up capacity development. The intern will be part of IRC’s Change Hub, a department leading IRC’s global influencing, monitoring, and research and learning activities. 

Main responsibilities

  • Analyse current communication activities and flows.
  • Lead interviews with selected participants and conduct broader research related to improving overall communications at key junctures.
  • Map out opportunities to better capture and mobilise data to improve overall satisfaction with the platform and drive enrolment.
  • Devise and implement recommendations and measures for success.
  • Applicant must be enrolled in or just graduated from a recognised (under)graduate programme. Preferably in a field related to international development, training, capacity development, library/information science or AI.
  • Applicant should be well-organised, self-motivated, and reliable, with a strong interest in development cooperation and international relations, and the water, sanitation, and hygiene.
  • Applicant should have an affinity for information and knowledge management with an eye for detail, accuracy, and relevance.
  • Writing skills and excellent computer skills, including using Excel, are required. 
  • Good knowledge of English is required.
  • Knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated volunteering or other experience related to development cooperation.

Details of the position

  • Start date from June 2025.
  • The candidate will initially be offered a 3-month internship, with the possibility to extend to 6 months if the assignment requires this, for 24 – 40 hours per week. The internship will be assessed after the first month to determine if it is a good mutual fit for the intern and for IRC.
  • The intern may work be remotely (online) or from the office in The Hague.
  • Stipend for the internship is € 425, – (gross) per month based on a 40-hour working week.
